As long as you don't spill your drink

Man, I hate labels. I am a two beer a night person and never get drunk, maybe just a little tipsy.

I think you are doing fine. Just remember - everything in moderation. Sometimes I have a problem with that. Like obsessing over my broken ACC on my car.

I am looking forward to a cold Beck's now. Oh yea! It is almost 5 PM.

Set yourself a goal of not drinking for a certain amount of days (I recommend 10). If you can meet it, you're fine.

I couldn't, so I quit and been dry for awhile.

If a family member or someone close to you sincerly mentions that you may have a problem, listen to them.

Being an alcoholic and having an alcohol problem are usually related, but not necessarily. For example, if I were a teatottler and my wife had one drink every month or so and we fought over it, then both of us have an alcohol problem.

If alcohol interferes with your life or the life of people you love, then you have a problem (or if you get drunk and drive 80 mph, oopsie, 'nuther thread ...).

OMG, can I use that. I am going to print this out and put it in my desk and can probably use it 2x per week (not at home, in my biz).

Ask your liver.
OK, fine... ask your doctor to have your liver checked. Blood test, and a urine test ought to do.

Why? My aunt died last year at age 47, she bloated, yellow all over, and spent the last few days in a diaper, because she was too weak.

So.....Check your liver!

Be a little bit careful about confessing any alcohol issues with your physician,,,, unless you are on the stretcher, suffering from the DT's. Here in Pa. a fellow told his doc he drank a 6 pack a day. The doc told the state and his license was immediately revoked. A year later he still hadn't gotten them back.

Every culture has a different perspective on alcoholism.

I know many in this country who believe that you are an alcoholic if you drink everyday.

The Japanese drink more than any other people I have ever seen. My co-workers got falling down drunk every night. And I mean every single night.

And they showed up for work early the next morning, no worse for the wear. It is something that I could never understand how they were able to manage it.

Simply put, the Japanese believe that even if you pass out drunk every night, if you are able to hold a steady job and support your family, then it is perfectly acceptable.

Maybe they're on to something. Hmm, notice the last two sentences.

I'm betting it's a combination of genetic factors and diet. I assume by your name and some things you've said previously that you're first-gen immigrant? The reason I ask is I'm wondering if you still eat a diet heavy in fish and other seafoods and low in animal fat or have you been seduced by the Siren call of seared animal fat?

LIVING LONGER: The Japanese still live longer than anyone else. Japanese women born in 1993 are expected to live 82.51 years- up .129 years from the previous year. Men are expected to live 76.25 years- up .16 years. French women placed second at 80.94 years followed by Switzerland at 80.90, Iceland at 80.89 and Sweden at 80.79. American women placed at 79.10 years. For men, second place was Iceland at 75.74 years, Sweden at 75.35, Hong Kong at 74.90 and Israel at 74.54. U.S. males were at 72.2 years. The Japanese said their long lives was due to moderation in eating and drinking. Other advice was early to bed and early to rise religious faith and hard work.

I'm not a first generation immigrant, but we still eat a diet of mainly fish, rice and vegetables.

We eat red meat maybe once or twice for dinner.

I always marvel at the life expectancy of the Japanese.

In spite of their good diet, they smoke and drink like no one else, which you'd think would counter balance the diet.

It is interesting though that the leading cause of death is stomach cancer, which they blame on excessive salt intake.

I drink heavily, and my wife asked that I have my liver function checked my my primary care Dr.. I took the appointment and asked her do do just that; her answer was very surprising. She told me that she would not just do liver function b/c my life insurance Co. may look at that record, contact her for an explanation, and based on my inquiry determine that I was a "risk" to them and cancel my policy. My Dr. said that life insurance inquiries are fairly routine. In order to "throw them off the scent" she just ordered a larger battery of blood tests w/the liver function included, then under inquiry she could just say that it was a routine exam.
This is just my experience, but make sure if you see your primary care Dr. for tests, that you ask about such things as life insurance inqiuries.
