89 Olds Toronado slams into reverse... help plz

Allright, this has been an issue since my uncle first bought it (last year)... He owned 6 cars at the time, and this was a (very nice) beater, so it didnt get fixed.

When you put it into reverse, and have your foot on the brake, it slams into gear... Enough to make the dash shudder a little bit, and jerk the car. Fluid leval is good, little bit dark (but not burnt smelling), but I dunno.

I'm about to drop around $150 on struts, rotors, pads, and mabey even ponying up a bit more for new frount speakers (blown to SHLIT... thanks Jamie, my wonderfull cousin)... Possiably a new headliner in the winter (cheap time for my uncles friend who owns an interior shop)

I bought this car to save money, I took out a loan for it also (can pay it off easily enough, but still...) It's a VERY nice ride, and an all around good car, except the problems I listed above... It also needs door panals cant find them ANYWHERE... 86-89 only, changed for 90+, if anybody knows where some are...

Any idea on what's up with the trans? Mabey it's bad motor mounts, mabey i should put some synthetic trans fluid in it... I dont know enough to know what I dont know about this situation.

I do plan on doing the fluid/filter VERY soon... next weekend possiably.

tks alot
~Nate

Have a helper put it into reverse while you look under the hood at how much the engine/transaxle move. That might give you an idea about motor mount condition...

I dont' know much about cars, but with recent transmission problems, I would say you may be right on about the motor mount and this would be easy to check.

Those cars had a dog bone engine mount that went between the engine and radiator support. It was later updated to a small shock absorber. Check to see if the mount is original and in bad shape. If it is youll have that problem.
If the mount is ok get it to a trannt shop before you spend any money on the car slamming into gear can be an indicator of more seriose problems.

yep, engine shudders alot when put into reverse (WHY ONLY REVERSE???)

it's got the dog bone... I'll call up NAPA, and ask what the part # for the 89 motor mount, and if it's different for a 92... if it is, then I'll see if it will fit.

tks alot

Shoot, do what my buddy did with the 93 300E he bought from me...park it so you never have to put it in reverse. He finally broke down and put a junkyard tranny in it after his wife parked it in a spot she couldn't get out of because it wouldn't pull in reverse.

Exclamation *** Change the fluid... ***

At least, change the fluid and filter...

All cars that I bought used (What am I talking about!?!? ALL my cars were used! ) had the fluid and filters changed w/in the first week I owned them (Or, is it pwn? ). Any valve/piston in the tranny would, usually, move more freely and operate smoother after the "new" stuff was put in. It would take about 1K-2K worth of driving to smooth things out, but it would improve it nonetheless.

You mentioned that the fluid looked a little dark? That's a sign of overheating of the fluid and contamination from the friction plate, for whatever reason (Usually, it was that trick of holding the brakes just hard enough so you could get the rear tires to spin and smoke 'em before doing a "burnout"...this is a RWD ride, isn't it?).

Also, have a mechanic check the electricals to see if there's some sensor or relay that's not doing its job...you might be idling too high and because "something" is not positioned correctly, or sensing properly, you're over-idling and putting stress on the friction-plate in the tranny, thereby, possibly, causing excessive heat and wear.

Either way, get something new in there real soon...you don't want to be breakin' down in traffic during the 5pm rush-hour.

It’s internal, there is no external adjustment for a 440/ 4T60 FWD transmission. Has a band for reverse. If you want to try something, add a pint of lube guard modifier for Torque converter chatter.

it's a FWD ride...

Changed the dog bone, didnt do a damn thing

I'll be changing the transmission fluid next weekend... It's unfortionate, but I cant do it this weekend, unless I REALLY pull, which is doubtfull...

how about trans X brand transmission superfixer in a bottle? I've got an old quart of it that I didnt use for the truck...

and for the stranding me issue... I'm within walking distance to 75% of the places I drive, it's just take an hour or so walking to get to work...
