He was wrong in the particular but may have been justified in the general.

What I mean is this: He destroyed private property. At a guess, that is at least a misdemeanor. Being an obnoxious, inconsiderate jerk is not a criminal offense.

However, in the general sense the particular behavior of one person infringes on the rights of others.

one day in my optomist club meeting my phone went off in the pocket of my jacket on the wall hook near by. i pretended not to know whose phone it was since if i had acknowledged it i would have been fined a quarter.

i felt really naughty and got away with it.

folks talking on cells in public really bothers me. they seem often to shout out toward everyone else.

I agree, the teacher had a right to confiscate the cell phone.

He did not have the right to destroy it, however.

My method is real simple. I don't put it on vibrate, I just turn the d##n thing OFF!

My voicemail greeting has the following message after identifying myself - "If I didn't answer your call, it's because I'm eating, sleeping, driving, or at work, and my phone is turned off. Leave your message and I'll call you back."

My biggest peeve about cell phones? Let's just say I have been known to stick my head out the window and yell at another driver "HANG THE F##K UP AND DRIVE!!!!"

Don't you guys see that this is a mind game that the professor is playing on his students? He got a friend to come in and purposely set off his phone so he can break it and show his intolerance of them going off in class. The guy that gets his phone smashed also brings in a camera friend so he may record this whole scene. You can hear the camera guy laughing as the professor is walking up to the student whose phone he smashes. Also, why would he smash someone's phone but let another person sit there with a video camera recording the whole thing. I doubt this professor would be that stupid to break someone's phone in front of 50+ students and then get right back into what he was teaching as if nothing ever happened. You can tell that it's a first day class as well because he's explaining the curriculum and talking about bringing in advanced classes etc. Also, what are the odds that the student is sitting in the first row by himself?

Oh and by the way, if this is real (2% chance), I would cause such a huge scene that it wouldn't be funny. I would right away run to the campus Police and have them walk into the class to investigate the crime. Breaking private property is like vandalism and is punishable. Needless to say, this video is fake and produced with one purpose in mind --- scare students.

No *****, genius. Apparently it eludes you that thus far, we're not especially interested in the set-up, we're interested in the social responsibility of cell phone usage.

Unless he was chained to the floor, he could have gotten up and went outside. also should have left the phone or either vibrate or off.

Instructor could have confiscated it and forwarded it to the dean and not smashed the phone. Unline the porno movie that goes "Two Wongs make a White", both are wrong in this case.

With the retail cost of cell phones these days, that could easily rise to felony destruction of property in some states. And yes, I would be happy to file civil and criminal charges against the teacher is incident was real. He has the right to control his class and if need be, eject and one who does not follow his/school rules. He has no right to touch anyone or their property. The law does not stop at his classroom door. As to a first day stunt to get his point across, I'd want to change classes. If that's all the better teacher he is, I don't expect to really learn much.

I agree that he should not do it. However, why do you think that his attitude has anything to do with his knowledge level? I've worked with total jerks that were competent as hell in what they were doing.

Exactamento El Jefe! The last thing we need is a professor teaching violence who is nothing more than a Roger Clemens wannabe.....
