I am not the world's biggest Eric Clapton fan, but his solo in "Badge" might be the best I've heard. He also did a solo for the Beatles' "Let it Be" that was just about perfect.

As for solos in general, I like Stevie Wonders' harmonica solo in "For Once in my Life."

Comfortably Numb is currently my all-time favorite.

Intro to 'Mean Street'.
November Rain/Sweet Child O' Mine.
Voodoo Chile.
Crazy Train.
You Shook Me All Night Long.

Ah...where's that air guitar...

Don - I saw that JerryC video a while ago, search for another one, some guy named 'Two' something...does it even better (arguably).

Steve Vai in... basically anything and everything he's done. One of my favourite bits is in Touching Tongues, and Devin Townsend is a fantastic singer. Pity he ruins himself in Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band.
Joe Satriani, again in everything he does. Ice9 is a quirky piece that always makes me think of an old skool arcade game - unsurprising considering he writes music for them! Of course we also have the obvious: Surfing With The Alien, Satch Boogie etc etc.
And then we can go down the totally different route of metal bands - Dimebag (R.I.P) in Cemetary Gates proved that Pantera truly had use of one of the best guitarists of the genre.
Also holding on to that style we have Zakk Wylde with his numerous awards and recognition. One of my favourite pieces of his is in the middle of In This River, when he's standing in the water having just smashed the piano up (if you've seen the vid).
On a slightly different again tangent, Eddie Van Halen. Who can deny this virtuoso his title as one of the greatest? 5150, Panama, Top of the World - all fantastic in every aspect, but even better in their respective solos.

Off the top of my head:

1) Randy Rhoads, "Mr. Crowley"
2) Eddie Van Halen, "Eruption"
3) Kirk Hammett, "One" (second-last solo)
4) Eric Clapton, "Layla" (Unplugged version)
5) Joe Satriani, "Satch Boogie"
6) Noel Gallagher/Paul Weller, "Champagne Supernova"
7) Zakk Wylde, "No More Tears"
8) Brian May, "Bohemian Raphsody"
9) Phil Collen, "Foolin'"
10) Angus Young, "Hell's Bells"
11) Steve Stevens, "Rebel Yell"
12) Slash, "Night Train"
13) Tom Morello, "Bulls On Parade" (absolutely brilliant)

I'm sure I'll think of a dozen others as soon as I post this. I've always thought a brilliant solo isn't just about shredding or showing off with obscure scales/modes. Its about making the song better. Its about "getting" the song. And sometimes simple is best of all. I think the lead line/solo on The Killers "When You Were Young" is simply brilliant because of what it does to the song.

Clapton is really known for his solo on Layla.

My favorite guitar player by far is Billy Duffy of "The Cult". Intense soloist.

Anybody here familiar with Phil Keaggy? I haven't heard anything by him since the early eighties, but he was really, really good back then. He has a band called Glass Harp.

Aye.

King Crimson did some good stuff. I heard "20th Century Schizoid Man" on XM and it reminded me how much I liked them back then. I wonder if anybody has the poop on them?

Not really a solo, but for acoustic work I love 'Bron-Yr-Aur' by Page/Zeppelin. Not 'Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp', but the simple acoustic Bron-Yr-Aur from Physical Graffitti.

It reminds me of a summer field.
