Mike,
Because you disagree, you do not think someone's opinion is useful?

I think that Jim's point is valid from the POV that the ready availability of weapons makes it easier to commit these types of crimes.

The debate on whether stricter gun controls can prevent these kinds of events from occurring is far from over. I don't think that we have seen all the evidence yet--from either or both sides.

Oh man, I got a friend from highschool that went to VA Tech. I am going to call him to see is he was around this...

This makes me worried... Being a college student in a not so nice town makes me a little more worried. Although the odds of this happenening are low, it still is possible.

"A public gathering will be held Tuesday at Cassell Coliseum at 2 p.m."

I'm about 100 miles away; I may actually attend this. I feel so useless having to watch the news without being able to do anything, help in some way. There's really nothing that can be done, and that's the worst part of it. I was @ UNC when Wendell Williamson shot and killed 2 students in the middle of the day in Chapel Hill, and then of course the Phi Gam fire that killed I believe a dozen students the morning of graduation in '96. Being part of a campus community during tragedies like these certainly can put you back in that moment when something similar occurs, and it makes you wish you could just do something for those grieving. Certainly even more real, being close to your back yard.

We should keep political/philosophical arguments out of this thread, and keep the bereaved, and this large community of 26,000 students in our thoughts

It depends. If the guy had a fully automatic assault rifle, it'll be different in my mind than if he had only more normal guns.

I agree, blame the murderer not the gun he used.

A tragic event for sure, but an event that would have probably happened regardless of gun control laws.

Gun controls laws are effective in prohibiting law abiding citizens from owning weapons, not criminals. kooks or thugs. They will always have access to weapons, either through theft or illegal channels.

My only sister is currently continuing her education at VA Tech... She is fine, and was off campus at the time of the shootings. ----------------------------------------------- I think debating gun control/depresion pharma/or social problems, before the facts are in is a little inappropriate here. There are 32 dead young people in Blacksburg, and there respects should be the first agenda.

I've read he used a .22 rifle and a 9mm handgun. With all the carnage I figured he must have used some BFG, not a .22 and a 9.

God, what a mess.

If anything, it should encourage more people to carry guns, then it wouldn't take hours on end for cops to show up before anybody has the ability to defend themselves or others. That is if they ever get there in time. It seems they take their own lives more often.

You'd think so, but a lot of people simply don't trust anyone. I had to take a look over at the Brady website to see how they're going to spin this one.

Inapprorpiate? I don't think so. The facts may not be crystal clear yet, but the results are. Many people were killed and injured by a madman with guns. Talking about issues that may relate to this tragedy are not disrespectful. Already the knee jerk reactionaries are plastering the media with their solutions to "prevent this from ever happening again".

Not sure I agree, but it would make an interesting argument. It is sad that all those dozens of people had no self defense to offer.
