I don't like the BMW 3 series but they are popular and quite nice, the A4's are as well.

A 2002 E320 seems hard to beat these days, look at the prices!
Comonnnn Hatty! E320? A 210 HP V6 that drinks premium fuel? I never understood the attraction of those cars... I destroyed one in my dad's Accord V6, that only needs 87 octane...get a W124 E320 or even better E420 and make buying premium fuel worth it

The W210 is a nice car, its not all about speed. They get mid 20mpg's, and drive very nicely.

The Accord is a FWD car for starters, I hate FWD cars.

Haven driven both you can't really compare them, the E320 cost $20k more new and it shows. You get real wood, nicer interor, and they drive better. Plus it has the right badge on the hood.

If I wanted speed I could get a slightly older E55 AMG for the same money. But I really don't want to put 20k around town miles per year on an E55. Thats probably one set of $400 AMG front brakes, and one set of 18in tires at $1k, every year... Vs the E320 which just uses standard W210 brakes and 16in tires, which are much cheaper and last longer...

Also your talking 15mpg(maybe) vs about 20 for the 320.

Having a high performance work car would make very little sense. Depending on what I want to spend I might go for a 1995 E320/420. But I don't really want to go much older then that, I don't want or have time for another project car. In a few years when I get established I'll get a fast two seater something for when I'm not working.

Hey have fun man. I know RE agents that drive Porsche 911's, but I would like to retire at some point.

Or get an E430. Less expensive to maintain than an E55, you get similar mileage to the E320 (esp. highway), and while the performance isn't up to the E55's level, it is more than adequate. They usually come fully loaded as well - sunscreen, xenons, etc. An Accord, or most Hondas for that matter, won't be a problem at the lights, if you so choose.

I agree.

Pound for pound, you just can't beat a 2000-2002 E320 or E430.

You can get good, fairly low mileage examples in the middle teens, they get great gas mileage, and they are fantastically reliable.

The E430 makes the most sense of all the suggestions, an AWD version would be key for the nasty winters.

Problem is that I'm not at all practical. I've been looking at crap like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1969-Camaro-700hp-all-stock-street-legal_W0QQitemZ150135513487QQihZ005QQcategoryZ6161QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Easy enough for my short commute on a clear summer day -- even rumbling around to see customers, they're all so close. Could even use it as a promo vehicle.

Rain is an issue and this kind of purchase would warrant a winter beater, ala $1500 Subie.

Blech

I have a personal vendetta against the W210 E320, for whatever reason. Rusty spring perches, and an inefficient V6 engine. Its probably my most hated Benz, other than the C230 Coupe/the C240/the outgoing C class in general.

The E320 cost what...45-50K brand new? The sticker on my friend's 87 300E says it cost 41K brand new....either the dollar got MUCH stronger or corners were cut somewhere...maybe in spring perches..

I hope I don't see you rolling around in an E320 at the next meet, hatty! The coke bottle rims....god. E430 however...I like. Makes the premium fuel worth it.
Hell I'd even venture to the dark side and get a 530i or 540i before the E320 crossed my mind.

Alas I feel more comfortable with the dollars accumulating interest. I'll stick to the 77HP diesel

However I still do get a kick out of roasting this one particular kid who thinks his E320 is sooo fast and cool...with the Accord V6. My father noticed some weird tire wear on the front Michelin Pilots..hmm dad I have no idea!

Do the right thing Swede....get a 6.9. The turning radius is excellent, and it has really great city visibility. The air suspension also helps to dampen those pesky potholes too. And if you can't paralell park it, pull a Ronin and drive right through

A 6.9 would be interesting. Not many examples FS in these parts.
