Focus on CARS!!!!

I have two suggestions right off the bat.

As a Mercedes Benz fan, I would definately go to one of the Mercedes Benz Niederlassung ("Super Store") and cruise through the new car showroom and get a pile of brochures and then into the parts department and accessories botique, and maybe pick up one of those hard to find euro parts, and a couple of neat souvenirs (little model car, keychain, drinking mug, ball cap, etc)

Hamburg Niederlassung:
http://www.hamburg.mercedes-benz.de/content/germany/retailer-2/niederlassung_hamburg/de/home/passenger_cars/home/about_us/location.html

Dusseldorf Niederlassung:
http://www.rhein-ruhr.mercedes-benz.de/content/germany/retailer-4/niederlassung_rhein-ruhr/de/home/virtuelle_bu/home/about_us/rep_niederlassungen_rhein_ruhr/rep_niederlassung_mercedes_duesseldorf.html

Above all, though, ..
I'd go see C F Mirbach, it is like a museum of classic cars for sale, they have a store right in Hamburg.

They have some of the rarest and most beautiful collector historic and special interest cars, Maseratis, Gullwing 300SLs, the best of the best.

You should have no problems as lots of people speak good English.

Why don't you go down South to Munich, it's 'Biergarten Season'. Have a Weisswurst, a Weizen and a Brezn' on me ....

Take a look at King Ludwig's Schloss Neuschwanstein, close to Fuessen.

Not much in Dusseldorf nor Essen to do I'm afraid, except maybe shopping in Dusseldorf. Essen is even pretty dreadful...

Nearby Cologne is one of the cultural centres of Germany, and the Dom cathedral is well worth a visit:
Dom Cathedral - Cologne >>

When in Cologne, try the local 'Kolsch' pilsener served in these really funny tiny glasses. A well known 'brauhaus' in Cologne: Zum Paffgen, Heumarkt 62 (serve typical German food aswell). Also, do the cable car ride across the Rhein river aswell, starts near the zoo, and the 'hop-on-hop-off' double-decker bustour to see the city's highlights in 90 minutes.

If you're in the mood, there's a big American war cemetary (8,000 graves) just across the nearby border in The Netherlands>
Margraten War Cemetary, near Maastricht - The Netherlands >>

Go see a car museum if you have a day to spare >>
http://www.cometogermany.com/ENU/culture_and_events/german-cars-museums_8921.htm
The new Mercedes museum is really a MUST (designed by HG Merz)
Take the highspeed ICE train, takes just 2,5 hours to Stuttgart from Dusseldorf (reservations aren't cheap)

Berlin is the place to be these days, but maybe too far away.

Tschuss und viel Spass,
V.

I just flew a few weeks ago with Condor (cheaper than LTU, plus they flew directly to FRA).
What to see, will depend on where you are going (as Vronsky asked).
Landing in Munich or Duesseldorf?
