In a capitalist system, you charge what the market will bear.

No different than Macys charging $45.00 for a shirt that they purchase for $5.00. Eventually, if the market won't pay $45, they mark the shirt down to $20 and sell the remainder of the stock.

In your case, you presumably have competitors that keep your prices in check. You charge what you please until the customer realizes that you are ripping him off and he goes to a competitor.

It's the American way.

People that I liked paid a lot less though...

For example if I make you a sandwich and you are a jerk, you pay $4.99. If you are cool $3.99.

I guess thats a lot better than an unwanted, non-traditional, unsanitary condiment.

I have no problem with a a$$ H-O {double hockey sticks} E charge. It helps drive away the kind of customer thats makes running your bussiness difficult.

I do wonder about the wisdom of baseing your price structure on socio-economic/political/personal beef's that have nothing to do with your buisness plan.

Correct I think its smart business. A$$'s make everyone miserable including the good customers. So in order to weed the a$$'s out you make there experiance unpleasent and they go away.

We have a sign behind the counter. " PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE... ACCORDING TO CUSTOMER'S ATTITUDE ". Also when someone comes in and asks for a part that I have, and then proceed to tell me how bad they need it and can't find it anywhere else, I stick it too em and they leave happy. Don't worry. If any of you guys ever need electrical supplies, I wont stick it to ya. Not too bad anyway. besides, if you ever need to buy stuff at home depot, they really do stick it to you on some stuff.

No one gets to charge whatever they want, but in certain cases where you can determine the margin you can adjust the price.

When I used to work at the marina on high margin items we very often played with the price. Either we would match or beat West Marine, which isn't hard. Or if it was a real good customer, they would get a mark down etc.

Mark up is all realitive, more so on some items. Anchors for example have one heck of a margin. I could really mess with the price on a CQR if I was so inclined.

You might be surprised. How many folks know the exact pricing for commercial electrical supplies? I sure don't. Counterman could tack on 20% and what am I going to do...........try to find it at HD? Probably not.

Now, if you are a commercial buyer and you purchased 1000's of a given part, you'll know........but..............nobody screws with such a buyer anyway.

Sounds like you won't be in business for long. You have probably lost more customers than you'll ever know. People tend to know when they get ripped off by greedy small businesses, and they will never return. Very unethical attitude and you should be ashamed of yourself.

A business will adjust prices prices according to market changes.Right now steel, zinc anc copper, among other things are on the rise. If a company has a certain amount of a given product in stock purchased at xx price, but needed to buy more at xxx price, you would not sell the remaining product at xx price just to buy it again at a higher price. Take gasoline for instance. If the price goes up, you adjust your prices right away, you don't wait until your reserve runs out and then raise the price when you get more, because then you have say a supply of gasoline with half of it you paid 2.00 a gallon and half you paid 2.5 a gallon. You would not know where the 2 dollar a gallon stuff ends and the more expensive begins. You are sure to lose money that way. That is why you see 2.89 a gallon one night and the next day it has gone up to 3.00. most likely they didnt fill it up. The market on the product they purchased is fluxuating and while yes I probably should have not done what I did, but believe me, I'm not the only doing this. lots of merc mechanics charge high prices because they can. Why not make a better profit when you can, becasue the opportunity doesnt come aroud often. Just like the mercedes 02 sensor and the ford 02 sensor. why is it 150 bucks vs 40? because they can get it. This is just business.
