Army Desertion Rate Soaring

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/11/16/national/main3513410.shtml

(CBS/AP) Soldiers strained by six years at war are deserting their posts at the highest rate since 1980, with the number of Army deserters this year showing an 80 percent increase since the United States invaded Iraq in 2003.

Wouldn't you desert as well after so many years of useless war and no progress?

The war is to protect national security interests. You must be clueless since you can't see the big picture. And obviously you must not have a TV or read a paper otherwise you would know what progress has been made.

Better not go up against a 5th grader, you would lose....

Finally here is someone that understands why we invaded Iraq.
Could you please identify for the rest us these national security interests?

Considering your disgusting attitude of questioning the sanity of those who chose to serve, your opinion means squat.

No, I would do my duty.

Their are many worse things then serving in Iraq, like abandoning ones country.

I thought about joining the Marines or Coast Guard, maybe Navy for a bit, but decided to pursue other areas. I don't think I'd work well in a very structured environment. I kinda of regret not trying to get into the officer core now.

What does this have to do with this topic?

You're making statements on a topic that you know nothing about.

First off, I'll state this: I served in IRAQ for a 1-year tour. I feel that I may very well be better informed than most on this subject. I am NOT saying that I am, just may be. I am Military Police, which means I ran humanitarian mission security, convoy escorts and EPW operations as well as prisoner transport.

No, I don't think so. There's a job to do, and I've volunteered to do what is my country requests of me. All that matters is that we are there, and we will stay until the job is done.

Chas, correct me if I'm wrong, but you come across as a Bush hater. You state that you are a Vietnam Vet, awesome. What exactly did you do, and how long was your tour in Vietnam? I'm just curious. Several of your statements concern me though:

Others have claimed the the increase is statisically insignificant. From your figures it's apparent that desertions took a jump right around the time W was elected.
Yes, desertions have increased...I CAN READ. Didn't I provide the data? Or? There is no "or." Desertions have increased AND we are better off. If I can trust my buddies 100% at all times and NEVER have to worry about them disappearing on me, we can all complete our missions, faster, safer and more efficiently. I don't want to hear any PFC Lynch-isms "I just joined for the college money." Wah wah wah,

I see no reason for a comparison between GB's election and the spike in desertions. You see the spike took place in FY2000 right? That's Oct 1 1999 to Sep 30, 2000.

And this is because YOU have been there, and can confirm that what he says is true or not? You have been to Vietnam, not Iraq right? The soldiers that I spoke to that have been to both said that they are very different.

What exactly is that supposed to mean? Do you know of a person better suited to wage war? Just because someone may have been to a war doesn't mean they know how to lead.

I know many persons better suited to waging war, and all of them think invading Iraq was a mistake. The list starts with GHW Bush.

Believe it or not, "Duty, honor, country" still does have SOME significance to those who serve, despite Lance's questioning of their sanity.

I don't blame them, specially when they are being recalled back to duty after completing their term. If the situation was like WW-II, I am sure there would be minuscule desertion rates.

The law will take care of them.

I just saw a local show interviewing a panel of 6 Iraq veterans. They were all in their mid to late 20s. The main thing that stuck out was that they are offended by Americans saying "I support the troops but I don't support this war". To them it's all or nothing - you can't support a soldier or marine and then balk on the mission he or she was trained for. They lamented the lack of backbone and commitment among some of their fellow countrymen.

This was not a conservative talk show - it was produced by our liberal-minded county local access, with no swear words blipped out - I was pretty surprised.
