Ok well i finally bought my bike. I decided on a 2000 Yamaha R6, for the price it was money well spent ($3K) and it came with service records! Only modifications done were muzzy headers and muffler. Plus a 'euro' undertail. Easy to ride and much more comfortable then my friends old suzuki 600.
Opinions and suggestions welcome...

Welcome, Yamaha bikes are the sweetest handling bikes around and offer overall balanced machines. Be careful, ride paranoid and with total vision, predict the unpredictable and you will be safe and sound. Bike looks to be in excellent shape, good deal for $3K.

Looks like a killer deal and those are nice bikes. Never ride over you head. Ride like you are invisible because to some you are.

My opinion is that the obsession with jumping is the worst thing that ever happened to the motorcycle world. I try to avoid absolutes but I honestly believe that everyone that plays the sky-jumping game will eventually get hurt.

Whatever you do, don't get a big bike, start small and learn how to ride first. My suggestions would be a used bike such as:
- Suzuki GS500 - Suzuki SV650 (SV650S if you want more of a sporty riding position) - Kawi Ninja 500 (older ones are EX500, but same bike) - Ducai Monster 620 I've been riding for years and wouldn't trade my 400cc bikes...people that say you will outgrow the power don't get it...even a 400cc bike can toast most cars on the street and twisties if ridden correctly Even with the new ninja 250 it's a good investment, have you seen the used prices for a 5 year old Ninja 250, they are only some 10-20% below the price when new...always a market for starter bikes out there. Happy riding. edit: Guess I was too late in posting...anyway, just keep your right wrist under control on that thing. Actually the R6 is a good bike if you can resist the desire to wind it to redline...just ask Jason Williams (ex duke guard) and Kellen Winslow Jr.
