When I worked in the photographic industry, people would sometimes complain about my pricing. I would ask them what THEY thought was a fair markup for the product, whatever it happened to be. They nearly ALWAYS stated a per centage that was quite a bit higher than what our prices represented.
There are all sorts of things involved in the cost and price of consumer products, rebates, incentives, co-op, spifs, etc. The actual cost of something may not even be something the salesman knows. Sometimes even the dealer may not know until the end of the month/quarter/half . . .

Markup on most retail items is closer to 100% over wholesale. WalMart and other big box stores excepted, but only because of volume.
