Ever have knee surgery...??
I have had a dull ache in my knee for a few months now. Last week I was squatting down to play with my son and it felt like someone stuck a knife in my knee. It happened again a few days later. Went to the Ortho Surgeon and he suggested surgery for a torn miniscus.
Anyone have it done? How long until I'm back to work full speed?

check out the Swede thread
There were a few notes on the previous thread. I had the same surgery 3 years ago. I was up that day and the next 3 on crutches. I was out of work (office job ) 2 days and back on the third.
By the fourth day I was walking and driving slowly after that. Full walking within a week with some soreness. Four weeks out all was fine. I'd do it again. Much less pain and no swelling after any serious activity. Good luck. Chuck |

vw,
i had a torn acl and miniscus, so mine a little more severe. it was excruciatingly painful for the first 3 days. i stayed 2 nites in the hospital. if i moved my leg even 1 degree in either direction, there'd be shooting pain. i was laid out for a good week. to this day, i am in total awe of athletes who get hooked up to those bending machines a day or two after their knee surgeries. anyways, i went through physical therapy which was a waste of time. well, they could've taught me everything in a week and i wouldve been good to go. but for some people they are not disciplined. i just did it b/c i didnt want the doc to get mad |

I've been fighting thru a partial tear in my ACL since last skiing season. I can resonate with that knife feeling.....every time I try to wrestle my kids or bend the wrong way, I get it. I can still ski (but no jumps)....I can't play tennis or basketball....but I can run/swim/ride bike without problems.
I've been trying to rehab myself and build up the muscles around it for support.....but surgery is on the horizon. I tried to take my wife on a date last weekend (ice skating) and I was perilously close to sitting down on the ice and bawling....I f*&ked it up real good again. I'm not thrilled about having a cadaver's ligament in my knee....and I'm pretty stubborn. Good luck with yours though.

I haven't but my boss is out right now for replacement recovery (great timing on his part going into our busiest season ). He had the surgery on 2/25, was (limited) walking on the 27th, went to rehab on the 29th and was sent home on the 3rd. He's doing great and was surprised how quickly he was able to get up and about. He figures he'll be out 6-8 weeks from the time of surgery until he can fully regain strength. He avoided having the surgery for easily 10 years and popped Vicodin to cope with the pain. He said he realizes how stupid that was now.
That was for a full replacement, I'd imagine meniscus repair would be a little quicker recovery-wise but have no personal experience to base that on.

Had the same surgery three years ago, and my only regret is that I waited so long to get it done.
I tore my meniscus three times before I had the surgery. I was up without crutches the next day, washed my car on day two, and was generally feeling 100% within a month. I now run marathons with absolutely no discomfort in my knee, and that's after they took 30% of my meniscus out. Get it done, its not a big deal.

Going Friday. Partial tear in my ACL, one bit floating, and a miniscus with a tear (still flapping). I can assure you that I will be at work Monday, without crutches. This is round two for me, I did the same thing, to the same knee about 20 years ago.
Wish me luck...please I will need it

I've had the medial meniscus in each knee repaired. Twenty eight years ago the doc tried to scope my left knee but the tear was too big to pull out through the tube. So he had to open it up. I was on crutches for at least a week and was severely impaired for at least a month.
Five years ago I tore the meniscus in my right knee. Scope surgery successful. I walked out of the hospital about 4 hours after surgery with no crutches. I only had to wear a full length splint. My ortho, who is a sports guy, told me to let pain be my guide for resuming activity. I ran a mile 7 days after surgery. Was completely recovered in about two weeks. I'm a 47 year old long distance runner. Both surgeries were successful. Go for it.

I had a partial nephrectomy almost 5 years ago. I was out for 12 weeks and I had to pay my own health insurance on top of only getting 60% of my pay. I almost had to file bankruptcy after that one.
