Retire? The key component of my retirement strategy is the cessation of breathing.

I'm just looking for the day when I go to work because I want to, not because I HAVE to.

People are going to start having bigger families like they used to, just to insure there are enough kids around to support the parents when they get old and can't work any longer.

The writing has been on the wall for years. Either they are going to have to cut benifits or raise taxes...A LOT! No politician is going to say gee sorry but were going to have to cut that SS check by 30%. Consider that a lot of old people vote they would be pissing there politcal career away. So they are going to wait until their is a massive problem and they have to deal with it.

My retirement plan involves real estate that cash flows.

I do not recall the exact/ correct figures, but for the purposes of illustration, these "invented " numbers will demonstrate the point.
When SS was started, approx 30 working people made contributions to pay for one person's benefits.
Now, about 4 people make payments to support each person who is getting benefits.

Do you see the trend?

When it reaches 2:1, the people working will simply stop working.

It must fail.

As for depending on government promises.... I still have my original SS card which bears the statement, " Social Security Account Number XXX-XX-XXXX For Social Security and Tax Purposes---NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" ( CAPS ADDED FOR EMPHASIS)

If we continue to take social security payments from illegal workers, that should buy us a bit more time.

Even pessimistic economists project that the system can stay solvent for several more decades with only relatively minor adjustments. I don't pretend to understand those calculations, but they seem to be accepted by people on both sides of the issue. It's been going great for 70 years, lets keep it going another 30 and then see where we stand.

One change that they should, but probably won't make, is to apply a means test for recipients. If you make more than "x" amount per year from anything other than work, then you don't get SS. That would be just a little more of that socialism that I like so much. Seriously, though, means testing seems like a good idea to me.

I paid into SS for 40 years and I don't receive anything..........because I've saved all my life and have an alternate means of living if SS falters?

I've got one word for that:

BULL$HIT

So have many things that have become obsolete.

So why do they have to contribute to it and not get anything out of it?

No it hasn't. It started out at 2%. It's now 15%. Keep it going another 30 years and it's gonna be, what, 20%?

You guys are totally missing the point. Read WHY it is in trouble: because our congress HAS BEEN BORROWING from it for years, mainly to make it look like the budget was balanced under Clinton.
