Ever hear of earthquakes?

He's being smart...if there's no shelves, nothing can be put on them...if there's nothing on non-shelves...the "nothing" can't fall from the higher height, to the lower height, and hit the car(s) that are parked in close proximity.

He's got it down alright...even the boxes...the worst they can do is, maybe, just lean over onto what's parked next to 'em...but they can't "fall."

And besides...what's to say that all that taping and mudding is from a recent repair following a series of minor trembles in his neighborhood?

Give the guy a break!

He's from California!

BTW: The one thing missing? (One for each vehicle) The tennis-ball-on-string-bumping-the-windshield-stopper thingie!

Now that makes sense - thanks for the explanation.

I think the reason I focused on the "garage" aspects of his picture was because of the title he assigned to the picture "My Garage never looked so good" - If he had said "My car never looked so good" maybe my beauty challenged eyes would have been drawn to the car as opposed to the garage.

But I'll happily cut him some slack - and I'm sure glad I can use shelves without the fear of damage here on the east coast.

He's from California!

Yes, you could say I heard of them.

The '89 quake. 5:04pm. 10/17/89. I will NEVER forget it. I was there when it happened. Just off work, near 7th and Bryant streets.

I was walking down the street and heard a mighty roar. You could actually see the huge ripples, like waves in the ocean, coming straight at you.

The steady, crunching, inexorable tide, moving at seven miles a second.

The pavement buckled underneath me, and I staggered, as if drunk, trying to keep my balance, while above me, all the transformers on the telephone phone poles blew up in blue flashes, and I felt I that would die for certain.

Either swallowed up by God's earth or electrocuted by live wires.

Longest 10 seconds of my life.

The Marina District burnt up the worst.
It was hit the worst because of the rubble and landfill those buildings were built on.

The brick building facade, at 7th and Townsend, near the Flower Market. It collapsed on the street killing several people unfortunate enough to have been there walking.

I was only a block away from there when that happened.

I knew an Assistant District Attorney, Murleen Johnson, from work, who lived in the hardest hit neighborhood, the Marina ("Yuppieville"). She was a young single very good looking African American lady.

She had just bought some wine and cheese on Chestnut street, at a store, to take home, and turned the corner on Divisadero, and it happened.

She actually saw her own apartment building collapse in front of her, on North Point.

Had she not stopped off to make that purchase, and gone straight home, she most likely would have been killed or badly injured.

Couple of my friends who lived up on Anza Vista Terrace at the time, near the center of the city, near Masonic, sat and drank wine in their apartment, and watched the dark city that night, and saw the Marina on fire.

Much later they told me about what they said when they talked about it that evening.

They told me this:

They said, "Just imagine if YOU yourself, were that earthquake. It was like you were sleeping, and moved a little bit in your sleep, in bed". That was what this earthquake was like!!

Then they thought some more, and said, "Imagine if you were that earthquake, and ROLLED OVER in your sleep!!!"

Then they thought about it some more, and said, "Imagine if you were that earthquake, and you GOT UP OUT OF BED!!!!

Hey Jim!

Don't get me wrong! I wasn't making fun of the lack of shelves, I was pointing out that the shelves could have been lacking do to your experiences as a California resident!

Anyways, I respect the fact that you folks continue to live out there with the ever-present possiblilty that the next one could be the "ONE" - just like us in the Midwest who put up with tornados and the like. (Who know what those East-coast folks put up with? Frost-warnings? )

I spent a week in S.F./S.J. area about a week after Mt. St. Helens blew her top/sides up north...the whole time I was there? Not a wiggle or sneeze.

First earthquake experience? It was a Sunday morning, 0015, in Decatur, IL, sping of '83...it felt like my laundry was off-balanced in the washer during the spin-cycle...went downstairs, washer was still on the swishy-cycle...hadn't even got to the 1st drain and rinse.

"Earthquake? Nah!"

Found out a few hours later (0700), on WBBM radio, that it was a 2.3 (or 3.2) near St. Louis...and 'BBM mentioned that it could be felt as far away and north as Chicago.

I really don't envy you folks...

You should switch them around. Keep all the crap next to the Subaru so if it does fall over it won't hit your MB.

Whats up with all the tape joints on the dry wall? Do they do something different in CA?

I was 40 miles closer, at work in Santa Clara.

It made quite and impression on me too. Will never forget those swells comming down the street. They finally petered about 10 minutes after the quake ended.

Took over 5 hours to get home that evening.

It may be the perspective of the shots, but getting into the SEC might be easier if it was a RHD.

No, they are old alphnumeric plates (NOT personalized ones) that I was able to get for cars I used to own:

167JIM (off my 67 Cougar)

2JIM123 (off my 82 Crown Vic)

3JIM988 (off my 88 Crown Vic)
