Yes for sure change the password , BUT first sign into paypal then go to your PROFILE and check that another/different email address was NOT added to your account . I would also remove the CC info you have stored on PP and put it back in a few days when you feel secure that this is all taken care of. I don't store any CC info on PP anymore and the bank account I have attached to it only has a small amount of money in it. If I do buy something and use PP I just enter the CC# at that time.

Notify Paypal that (example) "As of 2:00 P.M. EDT, on Thursday, 10 April 2008, I, Tom X. Walgamuth, do hereby close my Paypal account, due to possilble fraud on my account..." (or whatever the situation is...)

Send the e-mail to their fraud division, membership division...any division that might play with your money. If they require a "snail-mail" version of you closing the account, get it done, then send it Return Receipt, via USPS...go on their website and follow THEIR RULES for terminating your account.

Then, open a different Paypal account under a new name (change your middle initial or leave it out of the registration all together) and use a different address from your closed account...use your work address or get a POB and use the Street address where the box is located and the POB number as the "apartment" number...then start "Paypaling" again. After a while, switch back to your appropriate address and try to start over again...a third time...

Good luck with this...and remember...If YOU didn't ask for it, YOU don't need it or need to open it!

So you think changing the password is not adequate?

I just changed the password. I felt proud of myself for accomplishing that!

Nope.

On the off-chance that "someone" got into your account and "scanned it" for the personal stuff, before you had a chance to change that PW...there's nothing to stop them from using your information to open another account under your name and w/your information and/or even "crack" your new PW, either by accident or computer.

Just close it out, walk away and start over...clean and clear.

Then, if anything shows up on the old account, you've got proof it's not you and there's no confusion about those facts at all...walk away...it's a battle that will eat you up if you stay and fight, fight, fight....

Good luck.

Changing the password is more than sufficient.

In fact, changing the password was not a necessity because you never provided any info to the phishing site.

Some folks get all carried away for no good reasons............

He didn't "log on" to anything.

He simply went to the phishing site where it requested information. I'd highly doubt that the site recorded his IP address..........and, even if it did so..........that's not getting them very far.

Just assuming that the site was only "phishing" capable is dangerous in itself...just showing up at the site gives the site owner ample time to plant a virus or mal/spyware or any other assorted pieces of crap that's out there...

Next time you're signing on...the computer might seem to take a few extra seconds to boot...you won't notice it right away...then a few weeks later, you'll find yourself having to "clean" your machine...you're getting wierd 'e's for extra-length, bigger whatevers, $$$s to borrrow, amazing offers too good to be true, etc...and you never got them before...

And all you did was click on a "link"...-

If it were my Paypal account, I'd be closing it and moving on...and I'd think twice before clicking on any more "links" - regardless what the original e-mail wanted me to do...

Or, you can ignore this post and within a thousand days, you'll be rich beyond your wildest dreams, or a thousand fleas from a dead camel's back will infest your nether regions and your arms will suffer an as-yet-undiagnosed malady that won't allow you the ability to reach down and scratch...

But, that's just my opinion...

Yes, I think you're correct.

Mr. Walgamuth should set fire to his computer and burn it to the ground..........hell, he probably should burn his house down as well to prevent that deadly virus from escaping and harming others.

If it gets really bad, we better notify the health department and they'll quarantine his area............damn viruses create havoc to everyone...........and all he did was to click on a "link".

What he should do is forward the email to this site http://www.ic3.gov/

These guys are serious about stopping Cyber Crime...

I usually send all the "Enter your PIN number to confirm your 'banque' account" emails to them.

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

If we must, we must. Some sacrifices have to be made.

The Phish are usually easy to spot, because the link text in the message will point to www.paypal.com but when you move your mouse over the link, the indication at the bottom of the window will show you would actually be going to someplace like www.paypal.gripe.nl or some such non-paypal web site.

You received a spoof message. No one has compromised your PayPal account, just because you received a SPAM/Spoof message.

But PayPal does have a history of having been compromised before. I don't like their requirement to link in a bank account - I much prefer just linking in a credit card where the transaction is pretty well protected. If someone compromises PayPal and drains your bank account, that's going to be tough to dispute and get resolved, because the money is already gone.
