So I was walking through OIA. . .

I was walking through the main terminal in Orlando Int'l this morning and I couldnt hlp but notice an ad on airport contracted advertsing media that was all 100% in spanish . I couldnt believe it the only thing I could understand was the URL to some website that would most likely be of little use to me. come to think of it in the spanish neighborhoods there are billboards that are all in spanish. I know we embrace people of all backgrounds, but Im starting to feel like the minority now. . .Im startin to think its time to get out of Orlando. . .what are we turning into, Canada? Does this annoy anyone else other than myself?

Same thing at Home Depot. Even 'entrance' and 'exit' are written in Spanish on the front door. It doesn't take much training to learn 'lightbulb', 'plywood', and '2x4'.

They must think Latinos are too stupid or lazy to learn a second language.

Hey it is all over. I think Lowes started the bilingual signs. Lately I have seen them putting the Spanish on top in BIG er GRANDE letters and the english on the botton en letras muy pequeñas...

Yes It is a problem and no I don't know what to do about it.

True story... My Great grandfather came from'a de old country (Italy).
He got here, said I am American now learned English and never spoke Italian again! Heck, he even voted REPUBLICAN!

To him and his generation, shedding anything that was not "American" was good.. Standing out was bad. The melting pot was hot and did it's job.

Today it is all about keeping your culture 'pure'.
I did not see it but I gather ther is even an Absolut ad out there talking about the reconquista of the South West USA by Mexico!

However, it is not just Latinos doing this. In NY there is a sizable Hatian population where I used to live. They insisted on everything being written in Creole! In the jewish neighborhoods everyting even the bumper stickers are in Hebrew or Yiddish. I think this is all an offshoot of the last fourty years of divide and conquer politics. Instead of thinking how Americans are alike (we are the people who had the gumption to leave our homes and cross the ocean, we all believe in democracy, freedoms, etc) we are focused on how we are different.

Isn't this how Rome went under?

I think that people should keep their heritage. I also believe that if you come to this country you should try to live like you are in this country and not back home to a degree. If I moved to Italy, I would still speak English, but I would sure learn italian.

A San Francisco story about that. A personal experience.

^^^^Many of them are. More than you think.

Listen, in 1994 when my wife from Peru was new here, she was crazy about this issue.

She told me (VERY well educated, MS in biology, but barely spoke English well) YOU HAVE to learn English in this country. It is the language they, speak, how can you expect to work and buy things you need if you cannot speak it?"

So, we went to the "Mission DEEStrict" (Latin Quarter) of San Francisco to search for English texts about learning to speak it as a second language.

We found a "Liberia" on the main street, and I waited outside in my '88 Crown Victoria while she went intside there.

All of a sudden I heard shouting and screaming inside there (I couldnt tell in what language)

Oh those Latin tempers. I could write a book about that, but nobody - at least any gringo, would believe me!!!.

Pretty soon she comes storming out of there, her face contorted with rage
(believe me it doesn't take much. with people like that!!)

And she tells me this!! (In English already!!)

"Did you know what those people in there (Bookstore) told me???!!

They said: "We don't know English, and WE DON'T WANT TO LEARN!! WE LIVE HERE, WE WORK HERE, AND WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT SPEAKING ENGLISH!!!"

With that attitude, how will they ever get anything, or get ahead?"

I need not tell you my wife learned English, VERY quickly, and VERY fast, with my support. She was VERy very clever also.

Her career rise in the Silicon Valley Biotech industry was meteoric. It began as a supervisor for Spanish speaking employees at a factory making those cardboard snack soups, in South SF, midnight shift. Those losers couldn't or wouldn't speak English. Listened to Spanish radio stations all night.

Within months she was a QC inspector at a HUGE Biotech firm in Sunnyvale, and the career path, there was METEORIC.

It was like watching a speeded up movie of the American.Dream in action.

SPEAKING ENGLISH MADE IT HAPPEN.

There is no other way.

Celebrate "diversity" all you want.

BUT NOT IN LANGUAGES other than English.

Even in the tiny little town in North Carolina where I grew up, Spanish seems to be fast becoming the primary language. Forty years ago this was one of the most homogenous places you could go. Now, it's just as fun of Hispanic folks as anywhere else.

you can keep your heritage but once you step foot in this country you better speak and comprehend basic english.

I've noticed this as well at Wal-Mart and other places of business in my area in FL.

My grocery store has english only signs and its great.

One day I was on break hanging out at the magazine rack and a customer came up to me(wic check in hand) and asked me" If I speak spanish" and I said "sorry I do not." She became angered and blew up in my face all yelling in this weird foreign language. I stood there and once she stopped said " Welcome to America, shut up and speak my language... or leave."

since I was on break and was not wearing my uniform(for the most part).. I have a right of opinion...

If you don't like it.. go home

another thing.. I cannot stand over proud.. anyones... If you live here... good.. who cares if you love puerto rico or... haiti so much.. if its so much better and you love it so much.. why don't you move back?

damn illegals

Being multilingual is a true talent. I can tell someone to "stick it" in 5 languages.

A little of it can be charming inside an American home: Getting the message:

When "brand" new here, Rosario looked in the closet in my bedroom and saw my folded sweaters in the closest.

She got all excited and upset, and barely able to speak ENGLISH after onlly a couple of weeks here from Peru, she told me this:

YOU MUST NOT PUT THOSE THERE!!!! FOR THEN WILL COME THE HORRIBLE BUTTERFLY OF THE NIGHT...

It melted my heart that she was so worried about my sweaters but could not find the word in English for "MOTH". It was so endearing to someone badly lovestruck in the first place.

That fast became one of her nicknames that I gave her:

When she was mad, (which happened a LOT!!! Those Latinas!!) her name was
"Mariposa Horible De La Noche"

She was my "LOQUITA" ("little crazy girl") when not "MI BEBITA" ("my little baby girl")

It was the ride of a life time, I will tell you that much.......
