Thanks for the encouragement. I've tried Chantiax twice, Welbutrin once and now the Commit Lozenges. I'm very jumpy at the moment and am reprogramming three laptops at once. I had suggestions for the wife to help take my mind of smoking. Come to think of it, I haven't seen here since I made those suggestions. No matter what, I've got to do this!

Time to quit drinking, too (if you drink), along with any other behaviors you intrinsically link to smoking. And one more time, best of luck -- it's all about determination.

I quit drinking for a few months. It helped break the nicotine habit, as a few beers after work were always accompanied by a few smokes. Cutting out the beer made it easier to walk away from the environment that promoted smoking.
My willpower was not strong enough to keep me off alcohol for long. I no longer have a beer at the end of the day at work. I do, however, still imbide once I get home. One or two light beers are still part of my evening routine. Some days a White Russian is my choice of entertainment. The important thing for me is moderation. Sure, 100% abstinence would be far better for me. But, in the grand scheme of things, a couple beers an evening compared to what I used to consume & inhale is a HUGE step in the right direction.
It's all about taking little steps to improvement.
You are taking the biggest little step right now. Good Luck to you!

David

Good luck to you, man!

If you're looking for something to read, try the Stephen King short story, "Quitters, Inc." It can be found in his Night Shift anthology.

Do not read any spoilers first!

Kevin- We are proud of you for doing this. I quit back in 89' and it was not easy. I was so addicted if someone walked by me with a smoke I'd start to salivate, that went away after a few weeks. I used the Nicorette gum back then and it worked for me.
Good luck and when you get the urge just go on the Forum and we are here to help. BTW your gonna start bringing up alot of crap from your lungs the first few weeks because the cilia will start working again and sweeping out crap from your lungs. Good Luck!

I almost forgot about that. I developed a cough for a while until my lungs were cleared up a bit I guess. Anyway ... I remembered being impressed at how quickly my stamina and wind came back after quitting.

It's nice to be able to take a DEEP breath without coughing or wheezing.

I wonder if that's the reason a lot of people put on weight after they quit? Food doesn't taste like $h!t anymore?

That ... and after you quit smoking, food can become a substitute for the routine of smoking. You need to avoid snacking when you quit smoking or you'll pack on the pounds.

Another hard part of quitting for me was taking breaks at work. At first I stopped taking them, but realized that I still needed to get away from the desk and relax for a minute every now and then.

I gave up the booze 7 yr ago. Just made up my mind that I had enough and slapped the monkey off my back. To take the place of having a bottle in my hand,I bought an electronic chess game, every time I felt the need to have a drink,I pushed a game of chess. It took 1 yr for the craving to subside, after that I was ok with going to a public or family event where alchohol was being served. The up-side is that I am now laser focused. Letting go of any habit takes a strong will ,determination and balls of steel. Congradulations Sir,now you will extend your life by at least 10 yrs. And if you fall off, dont beat yourself up.~Chilcutt~

I quit in 86' and it was the toughest thing I had to do. I did it with the nicorette gum and like Chillcutt had to remove myself from social situations where I'd be tempted. Kudos to all who have quit some sort of addiction and good luck to all who are trying.
