I Quit Smoking Today...Life Sucks at the Moment!

Well, the wife quit around four years ago and has made my life even more miserable than she usually does about my continued smoking so I decided to quit. Actually, I'm doing it to I won't croak out earlier than I should. I've always thought it was a nasty, disgusting habit but damn addictive. I'm using the Commit Lozenges and so far, so good. I feel if I can make it a week, I'll have it licked. If my posts are a little nastier than usual, please don't pay any attention. I'll keep you all updated on my progress.

Damn man, good luck.

Both my parents smoke, and have been pretty much smoking their entire life.

I have been trying to get them to quit for a year now, and so far nothing.... I am gonna pressure them more this winter.

Good luck Kevin. Glad to hear you're going through with it.

When I quit smoking, it took about 7 weeks before I stopped having urges. The first week was the hardest and it got easier every day after that. Years later, I still get a craving now and then, but it's easy to put it out of my mind.

The hardest thing to overcome is not having something in your hand.

Kojack used lollipops to overcome this.

Distract yourself. Get out of the house and go to a movie, a museum, a strip club, anywhere that represents a break from your routine.

You can try nicotine patches...seems to help some. Others (like a co-worker I knew) had disturbing nightmares as a side effect.

My father-in-law died of lung cancer from smoking...I never met him for that reason. The rest of the family who did smoke continued the habit, however.

Then my mother-in-law had tumors in her lung discovered this year. That seemed to finally be enough to get the rest of the family to quit.

My mother-in-law underwent chemo and is currently in remission...

Smoking Cessation

'Quit "Cold Turkey" a couple of times(Temporarily, evidenced by needing to again)

'97 Heart Attack and Quintuple Bypass @ St.Luke's in Jacksonville.
'Had to quit (They frown on smoking in the Cardiac ICU)
Physicians there put me on Wellbutrin(An anti-depressant) and "The Patch"
'NO discomfort...Patch took care of Nicotine / Wellbutrin took care of "step down".
'Two weeks later ,I forgot to replace the Patch, and figured out I didn't need it
anymore.
Smoking is Denial.
I hope you can "Stick to Your Guns".

Hardest thing I ever did in my life. Over a period of about 4 months, I cut down from 50+ cigarettes per day to 0 per day. No patches, no pills, no gum, no crutch. It will be 7 years this January. Unyielding determination to achieve a goal is exactly what's required. The second week after my last cigarette was when the psychotic rants came to visit. After the second week, it was a done deal. Best of luck!

I had a similar response when I tried the patch-certifiable stuff. Missed the mark that time.

hang in there powerpig, you can make it. It gives us that still need to follow through on it inspiration, we're rootin' for ya.

Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today is the one year anniversery of the day I quit by heart attack.
I went on Chantix, which really helped with the initial nicotine cravings. I highly recommend getting a Dr to write you a prescription for it.

Finding something to do with your hands is crucial. Little things trigger the desire to have that cig in your hand. When you feel that twitch to be holding a smoke, grab something else. I ate a hell of a lot of grapes during the first few months. Some say chewing gum helps, though I never tried that.

Walk rapidly away from the folks catching a smoke out side damn near every building you may be in or walking nearby to. You don't want the kind of comradery they have to offer.

I have not felt as good as I do now in more years than I can recall. Today I went for a walk with my wife, my 17 year old niece, her dog, and one of my dogs. We were on a very nice path along the Patuxent river in the Columbia area. We saw a boatload of others walking, riding bikes, & jogging. Everyone smiled & wished us well.
Today we walked between 7 to 8 miles.
One year ago 700 yards would have kicked my ass.

Best wishes to you. This could be the biggest lifestyle change of your potentially much longer life

David

Thanks for the encouragement. I've tried Chantiax twice, Welbutrin once and now the Commit Lozenges. I'm very jumpy at the moment and am reprogramming three laptops at once. I had suggestions for the wife to help take my mind of smoking. Come to think of it, I haven't seen here since I made those suggestions. No matter what, I've got to do this!

Just keep your hands busy. That helped me. I damn near went blind I was so busy for a while! My palms are STILL hairy!

Seriously, just stop for one day. The the next day, stop for one more. That helped me more than anything. It's easy if you just stop for one day. Just do everyday and before long it will have been a year, two years, . . .Good luck.

Time to quit drinking, too (if you drink), along with any other behaviors you intrinsically link to smoking. And one more time, best of luck -- it's all about determination.
