I want a Mac desktop for my studio, only because those in the music industry swear by them. Most midi interface gear I own require drivers to run on PCs but are plug-n-play on the Mac.

I am forced to use PC's for work, home office, and SETI@Home, but when I have the money for a personal machine it will be back to Mac for me.

I am starting to adopt this thinking as well. I use a combo of HP machines with XP and SUSE Linux at work, and XP and GOS Linux at home. My main prejudice against PC's is the security/spyware/virus mess with Windows and the level of geekness required to get Linux variations running smoothely. The Mac appears to have solved the problem of the geekness for Linux which makes it an all round better platform in my opinion. When I can afford one I'll probably get one. But it will be a desktop not a laptop.

Jeez. It's just a computer.
Mainly because I have spent a lot of money on the laptops I have for my office after 2 years or so of service. I usually cycle a desktop out of my office every couple of years too for use in my home office, that I also spend money upgrading when I put it into home service. I have a lot of friends that are not computer people, that have killed two birds with one stone by using a Macbook at home in a docking station instead of having to maintain essentially two home computers (station and laptop). Out of those friends, I don't know of one who has spent a dime on a major issue (one guy cracked his case, but he dropped the thing off a boat in drydock). I also had nothing but Macs before 1999 and only went with PCs because of network issues at the time and never had a problem with them so it isn't a bandwagon thing with me.

I will never use any of the crap most people use on a computer--but spending $300 more upfront on saving headaches and $150/hour repair bills is worth it to me. I know it may not turn out that way, but it isn't any big deal to me either way--its worth a try. I

FWIW, I'm doing high end Flash development work on a cheapo $800something, year-old 1.6ghz ACER laptop with a big LG flatscreen slaved to it. It's never let me down once and I haul it everywhere....even took it to the west coast last summer (w/o the slaved screen) to work on a project while on vacation (big mistake). It's productive as hell...my only complaint is that sometimes after it goes to sleep, it doesn't want to immediately reconnect to my wireless network.

Some would have you believe that only a faugging high dollar Mac will do graphics but they are dead wrong and I can prove it. A Mac isn't immune to being dropped and broken either.

My biggest time suck isn't the computer but supporting e-mail for my, bride, Dad and Thing One and, dealing with virus and hacking related issues that come up on the web sites I manage.

Hackers should have their nutz cut off.

The Mac I'm looking at is only $199 more than the Acer.

$1k for a Mac? I'm obviously behind the times.

Many feathers in this cap, my friend. When the dirt biz went on it's nose in September and an internal client at my former employer wanted some Flash work done I took it on but only if I could work from home. It's been a nice dance but the song is almost over.

Anyway, the cows only need a hand every 2-3 days when it's haytime. So, I guess that I really am in the 'fertilizer' business.

The $1K post was directed you, but the 'brother' post was to CLK man tongue in cheek. But I hear you on the many hats--I wear quite a few myself.

Yeah, the Macbook is $999.00 no bs at the store and you have to buy Iworks for $49 installed. I already have an extra panel lcd monitor with my current setup.

I'm waffling though--several new people (I should have just kept my mouth shut) are pushing the Lenovo laptops now. They run about $650.

I'm going to pull the trigger on something tomorrow and get it over with--my complexion is starting to get oily and I am starting to get the urge to hang out in a coffee shop

Nice!

FWIW, my kids were able to use the Mac as soon as manual dexterity allowed it. They target people who think in symbols rather than sequences. Some people like one way and some people like the other.

I know, I know, the pC's got away from ctrl -alt etc stuff a decade ago. Windows has a nice, predictable interface, no question.

Go with what you know or take a risk on something different?

Nice buy JD. I personally could care less if my computer is a Mac or PC, I use whatever suits me and regard them all as necessary evils.

That said, I did buy an iPhone 3G. Price was good and since I got through to the rententions department of Rogers up here in Canada (they didn't want to lose an 8yr+ customer), the monthly deal was sweet.

I have to say though, it's a pretty cool little device. What really got me was how my 4 yr old picked it up and was able to browse around a bit and use the camera. Point being it's an incredible intuitive device, as per Bot's comment. I downloaded a free 'crazy chainsaw' app for it and he loves that.

P.S. Agree with the Mac store/geek thing, it's apparently ubiquitous.

P.P.S. Most hardcore old school D&D'ers would never let Mac geeks into the dungeon, not even for a 24K, 20-sided dice.

And, it practically can beam signal through a wall of lead....I rarely lose my signal.

And, it has a pretty nice MP3 player setup....so no need for a dumb iPod. Just a $4 microSD card or two.
Maybe I'll try an LG next. But its a Verizon thing, a lot of people I talk to have Verizon and regardless of the phone we have poor service issues.

My battery is just starting to get bad, but I have 3 years on it so I'm not complaining.

I know you are probably one of the only people here that has ever rode a 6'5" G&S on a radical cutback or hung ten off an 8'er down a tube at Hatt, but I got to distance myself from the D& D crowd, sorry
