Read your bible. Right there in Genesis, they describe how all the trouble in the world started with an Apple.
Yes, computers are tools. In the old world days, craftsmen knew everythng about their tools and the care thereof. Nowadays, too many of the people using comnputers are appliance operators (toaster operators?). They push button "A' then button "B" and their product pops out. If they don't get the result they expected, they are lost. I deal with these users all day long. I ha d one that had used her computer for 10 years and still didn't understand how the directory structure worked.
My youngest has been using a pc since he was 4-5. He walked into the knidergarden classroom, spotted the PC, sat down, grabbed the mouse and went at it. Teacher just starred in amazement. Then she realized it was my kid. She knew all of my kids had PCs in their rooms. (it was, however, a LONG time before I allowed internet access in their rooms). Same kid is now a senior in high school/junior in college. Don't know if the PC helped, but I don't think it hurt.

The Mac appears to have solved the problem of the geekness for Linux which makes it an all round better platform in my opinion. When I can afford one I'll probably get one. But it will be a desktop not a laptop.

The geekness of Linux is a side effect of its growing up process. It's going through a long shake-out and is now definitely ready for server duty. Another few years and the desktop will be straightened out as well. Ubuntu Linux is pretty close. I just hope they can avoid the bloated feeling of Windows.

I will never use any of the crap most people use on a computer--but spending $300 more upfront on saving headaches and $150/hour repair bills is worth it to me. I know it may not turn out that way, but it isn't any big deal to me either way--its worth a try. I
I almost made the switch to PCs around 1999-2000 for compatibility reasons, but money was tight and I stuck with the macs. Glad I did, they are now seamless using MS Office, which we and most of our clients do.

Like you I felt that not needing the IT support, and the grief of inoperable machines, is well worth a few bucks more up front.

I didn't have a computer until I was out of college and 2/3 through law school and I ain't doin' so bad

My old man is 76 and didn't have one until he was 70 and you would recognize the family business if I wrote it.

I love it when I catch one of my computer guys *****ing at a bar about the idiots computer he fixed that day--they run out of work real fast.

All this Apple talk (get it? apple talk) must have had an effect way over here. An public relations office across the street knows that I have a soft spot for old computers, so they called and unloaded some of their stuff. In addition to a couple monitors and a HP Laserjet that does tabloid sized prints, they threw a 17" iMac 1.83 Intel 512MB/160GB on the heap. "The LCD has vertical lines" they said.

Sure enough, there are several colored vertical lines on the screen but otherwise it works fine. Did a Google search about the issue and it appears that 17" Apple LCD displays are crapping out all over the world. If the device is out of warranty, like this one is, then Apple won't be of much help, but warranty and AppleCare units are being repaired.

Dorks lose

Bought a Lenovo product yesterday. Real nice, Clark 17in screen, 3gig ram, 360 mg hard drive and what howie says is a slow ass processor at 2ghz.

I like it. I also bought some kind of broadcaster like my LeapFrog cable transmitter that is going to turn my new laptop into a wireless music server for my outdoor side patio.

Sorry, I got you mixed up with another dork friend of mine--the Macbook was 2.2ghz, iirc, but had less RAM (without an upgrade).

Gonna hit 70 here today--thinking about blowing off productivity and starting that slow steady burn on the links around one if I can find somebody to play with on short notice.
