pick one easy to put down and pick up

I attempted to play trumpet for years. I would say all brass and most woodwinds require a degree of lip muscle fitness to get a good sound. This will take you a while as a beginner. Then, you put the instrument down for a month and you sound crappy when you pick it back up. A piano, guitar, or other possible instruments sound (tone) just as good when you pick them back up.

Pianos are hard to move, but there are many great electronic keyboards out there that are easy to move. They can also synthesize just about any instrument sound. I played an electronic keyboard at a music store that made better trumpet sounds than I ever did. There is pretty cool "midi" software out there that can transpose input from one instrument into the sound of another.

The good news is any training you get in one instrument is very transferable to another. Just a little skill building to master the next one. So you learn to read music with a keyboard, now you can read well enough to play harmonica with a little practice.

Have some fun at it, music a lot of fun.

Drums......if you can't do this, you can't do too much.

The late Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys:

Notice the simple handgrip......a caveman could do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6azLKnF7SM

Yeah right, and if you can hold a pencil you can write like Shakespeare.

Believe me, a lot of people seem to think sitting behind a laptop makes them qualified to be a writer ...

I've had a random resurgence of interest in playing an instrument, especially piano. I took lessons as a kid, but my instructor was far too boring for an active and imaginative kid like me so I hated it and quit as soon as my parents would let me. Back then I thought piano was all dull, plunky songs and exercises. In recent years I've developed a taste for classical music and PIANO ROCK. Oh boy. If only I'd know piano was as cool as this guy makes it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V91sQozzFgc&feature=related. Not the best video but you get the idea. This is just piano clips but he's also a very talented guitarist and has a beautiful/haunting voice ... and these guys write good songs. A lot of my favorite music incorporates piano, and it'd be fun to be able to imitate it.

Maybe you should try it sometime, you may even do better than you write.

I prefer to aim a little higher than THAT

Besides, I've tried the drums hundreds of times, and just can't get the hands and feet to work together. One at a time, no prob, try both and its a train wreck

My unprofessional assessment is that drums take a very different talent than some other instruments. I cannot keep a beat very well in that I quickly lose coordination, especially if it involves doing one thing with one hand and another with the other hand. However, I can carry a tune very well and keep excellent timing when singing, and have always been able to do that naturally. So I think it just depends on your strengths.

Yeah, Matt is a great player. One of my favorites is Bruce Hornsby. Saw him do a set once with Bela Fleck (virtuoso banjo player), just the two of them. Outrageous. Couple years ago he released a record with Ricky Skaggs that is a fusion of bluegrass with piano and drums. AWESOME record.

You said it. Tried double kick drums, full rack sets, cocktail sets. Only kit I would've liked to give try was Rick Allen's, after the accident. With a little practice with the triggering, I might have gotten it. Pretty cool to see the tech set 'em up though.

I used to be a pretty good trumpet player. I would be still if I practiced. For me it was relatively easy. Then I took a short shot at learning the bagpipes. Hard.

I've been a drummer for 14 years and I started out teaching myself. I played the french horn and saxophone for a little bit in high school, but nothing got the chicks like being a punk rock drummer. However, I wish that someone had forced me to learn the piano so I could understand "real" music. I tried to learn the bass and the guitar and I fail to grasp the relationship between notes and all that theory crap.

I say go for the drums. When I started it was a train wreck too but I played along with 50's rock and 70's punk, the easiest off all drumming IMO, until I could keep a beat. Now I've played in country bands, punk bands, metal bands, etc. and use a double kick pretty well, and toured a bit as well.

You've gotta think about what the audience sees (mainly those who may be attracted to you ). The lead singer and guitar players have huge egos, the bass player is boring, but the drummer is back in the shadows, mysterious, has obviously great rhythm, and doesn't have a microphone to make an ass out of himself. Drums = you're golden!
