I haven't touched a piece of beef since the PETA videos from Agriprocessors in Postville surfaced a few years ago.

I was already having to pay a premium for beef that was supposed to be free of added hormones and pesticides, but the cruelty of the industry combined with the health risks took all the pleasure out of eating the stuff.

Yup. And don't forget about the antibiotics they pump into these animals so they can digest corn without exploding. (Ruminant stomachs are made to digest grass, not rich grains like corn.) I haven't had a piece of beef since around 1990. Started out as part of a weight loss regimen, and I felt so good and the weight was so easy to manage that I never looked back. Since that time I've done enough reading to understand the many other benefits... personal health, public health, environmental, moral. If I were to ever eat meat again, it would only be from wild game, as the poster about elk had written.

Donīt they grow a lot of soy in the midwest too? So, beef and tofu in the heartland must be prime!

FWIW, practically all of the feeder cattle sold here in central Texas wind up in feedlots in Iowa and Nebraska unless they have too much ear (ie Brahman-influenced) for the time of year they'll be fed out in the lots. Generally, for those animals, spring sales ship north, late summer and fall sales ship south.
