4-5k is about as far as I'd take a 616/617, they make way more soot than a 603.

speaking of which....actually it would be sneakers which averages out to two pairs each year so about 60.00 a year. Gas wouldn't be that much a week but it's the parking tht employees have to pay for 120.00 a month!

my miles vary every day.yesterday it was 180 today it was 275,tomorrow ??? thats why i bought a tdi jetta.50 mpg/s and 10k oil changes.

I do 84 miles one way each day. I change the filter around every 2500-3000 miles and the M1 every 5000 to 6000 miles depending on the weather I average 27mpg in the SDL

I also have a spreadsheet but I just track fuel, oil, and repairs. I figure the insurance is the same whether I drive the car or not...

Buying an S class Diesel was a life saver. The truck is WAY too expensive to run every day and Fritzie the BMW is too small and uncomfortable for long trips especially sitting in traffic.

80 miles round trip 76 of which is I-75. I drive the '84 190D stick as much as possible. Only getting around 31 mpg due to bad engine. It will be replaced soon. Wife is still driving the 560SL. That gets pricey when gas is up (and really isn't cheap now). when the SDL gets back on the road, she will be driving it alot. She is mumbling about changing jobs so hopefully, she will work closer to home. One opened up last year about 4 miles from the house but she would not put in for it (she would have had it). Change scares her to death. I'm keeping my eyes open for a job closer to home too. Still kinda hard to leave a fairly secure job with good pay and 23 days vacation.

This summer I'll be doing 140/day! I'm hoping to get both my 300D and 440KZ up to snuff...I should be looking at 30mpg/60mpg respectfully

I drive about 50 miles a day around town doing stuff. Be it Lowes trips, dump runs, building department stuff, meeting people, etc. Does that count as a commute?

The next house I am doing is about 450ft from mine, that will be one heck of a commute. This ones about 8 miles, so its a bit of a drive.

If not for a turn I could see work from home, it's about a 1/5 mile.

We have some family friends in FL, the husband telecommutes but the wife is still teaching. In CT! She takes a 5PM flight home every Friday and the last flight headed this way Sunday night. She says the majority of the people on those flights are the same ones every week so she's not alone.

lots of frequent driver miles

Work is 70 miles away, door to door. Add in a lunch trip and I average 150 miles a day. This week with a trip to see a buddy and working 6 days I will hit 1000 miles. I'm currently using an 03 Infiniti that gets 26 mpg. Repairs have been 0 for 3 years and I got a good price on it with low miles. It's just not fun 8-(

I've got plans in action to get the diesel running again. The fuel costs won't be lower, but the depreciation costs will be and the fun factor goes up. The deciding point will become the repair costs or if fuel spikes $4/gal again.

I generally think of car ownership costs in 3 groups:

- rolling / mileage dependent costs like tires, oil, fuel, trans flush
- maintenance / repair like brakes, shocks, ac compressors, antifreeze flush...
- depreciation, what did I buy the car for, what can I sell it for

My two all time winners were a '90 Pontiac Bonneville and my 87 SDL. The Pontiac I bought 3 years old, with 30K on it, for $9K. I drove it with minimal repairs until 170K and sold it for $2K. The SDL I bought for $3K at around 200K miles, drove it for 100K miles, had about $3K in repairs, and sold it for $2.2K. Both cars got about 27mpg.

I've been thinking of a 50mpg vehicle, but the depreciation hurts more than the fuel savings at current fuel prices. I think 40mpg this year is the new 25mpg from 5 years ago. When fuel was $4/gal it really moved the math away from the older cheap 25mpg cars to a more recent 35-40mpg car with fewer repairs. If you drive lower miles / year the vehicle mpg will be a much smaller impact. We'll see what the summer brings.
