I have one thats right between my right upper lip and gum, and its killing me! Usualy I ignore them and they go away but this one is pissing me off. How do I get rid of it, or at least make it not hurt so much? Any remedies?

Come on Hatt.. where is it really?

I think there are over the counter treatments that seem to work well if I can remember... but the last time I had a cold sore is when I was 13. Since it's a virus i dont know if there is much you can do except use those creams or gels to stop them from itching.

I don't know if Abreva is any good, but it is marketed for that purpose. I got cold sores in my youth and such products were not available, but I no longer get any outbreaks (although you are never rid of it). Stress would bring them on back then.

This will help it go away, but I must warn you it will not make it feel better right away . . . it will sting a tad at first . . .

Take the tip of your finger, and dip it in water (or hydrogen peroxide!) and then dip it in table salt, then press this against your owie . . . it will sting, and you will drool . . . (No pics please!) leave this on as long as you can stand it . . . then rinse, take a breath . . . repeat in 1 hr!

I have also found the L-Lysine (a vitamin/mineral supliment) helps, but works best as a preventative . . . take one pill a week (500 mg)

Eating too many tree nuts will do it too! (yeah I know peanuts are not really nuts! But most people . . .)

Man up kid; embrace the pain, file it away and forget it. They go away after 7-10 days.

I just went through this myself with an abscess and then got a large sore on my gum after the temp crown.

I think what you're calling a "cold sore" is really an ulcer. I used to get them a lot when eating spicy food like bar b que potato chips. The sharp chips would create small cuts in my gums which would become irritated by the spices in the chips.

I used a variety of methods to relieve the pain including Anbesol and Chloroseptic. However, the best thing I found was a product called Ora-base which is an antiseptic that forms a protective "cap" over the sore.

The most important thing though, is to NOT PLAY WITH IT WITH YOUR TONGUE!
