She has it better than most, but I still have sympathy. Most would choose to live a lavish lifestyle if they were making lots of money. You can not fault her for that. If income suddenly changes, and their house is worth half of what it was so they can't get out of it, people will struggle to get by. I am not sure if this is the case with this article, though. I feel worse for the maid, and many others, but I'm not going to crucify this woman because she makes 10x more than me yet is still having a hard time.

The fact that she is actually working hard, not living off of parents or a trust fund, has kids and a house to maintain makes her life a struggle just like everyone else. It sounds like her personal life isn't the best either.

People like this live in their Gatsby-like worlds, thinking everything will always be perfect, and they've never had to live with "less". So when it all goes tumbling down, they end up in despair. These kind of people spend more on "grounds and estate maintenance" than many people have for a yearly salary period.

Even worse is where a large number of these individuals make their money. Shady bankers/stocks/investment/financial workers that are involved in illegal and ethically questionable practices....even the woman in that article, vice president at Mastercard? So essentially her salary comes from debt-strapped people who have large credit card bills and pay huge amounts of interest every month.

Her kids are going to end up the same spoiled "I deserve even better than I grew up with" type people. *shudder*

Yeah the recession hits everyone. I know of a few boat purchases that are on hold because of it, and one guy I sailed with killed himself over it.

Wallstreet's melt down was pretty bad around here, it affected a lot of people. Our RE market won't pick up until those hedge funds and banks start hiring again. All I can say even though it sounds bad is thankfully the government is buying a lot of war material, or CT would be screwed. Blackhawks, jet engines, and guns proved a lot of jobs.

She couldn't sell that house these days, she wouldn't get anything for it. So she might as well stay and keep her kids in good schools. IMHO merrying back into money would be a good idea...

Pretty much.

The only upside is the live-in apartment that should keep her living expenses minimal.

There's 6k.

Many people in many normal areas could save a fortune if they actually had their kids do some work around the house....I paid for all of my Benz just by mowing lawns for several neighbors for some years.

No kidding. Why else did farmers at the turn of the century all have 12 kids? Free labor!

I will be making my kids do ALL such tasks around the house. It will cover their rent! If they are lucky, they'll get an allowance or some $$ for some of the stuff they do.

I always cut the lawn for my dad when I was little, and I gave him a break, I only charged him 1/2 price.

There's always something called a "short sale".

I say tough $h!t! Tighten your belt and live without all those extravagances.
No sympathy here either.
She's probably a witch and her ex-husband had enough of her lifestyle.
Kids sound like a bunch of spoiled brats too.

Man you rich guys sure do have it easy, it would have been nice to get allowance or even get paid for doing our own lawn.

Its even funnier because we have more lawn then our two neighbors combined
