The problem we're having this summer is all of our dogs are itchy all the time. We haven't figured out a solution to that one.
On the aforementioned list, Purina is at the very bottom.

It has the most by-products and generally undesirable fillers.

Whether the higher rated brands will result in a healthier dog is completely open to discussion. Many people subsist on a diet of eggs and macaroni and cheese and live to be 80.

It's your dog............we report........you decide.

When you feed a dog junky food they just have to eat more of it, and thus poop 2-3x as much. I found my dog's *output* decreased about 70% and was much more solid once he was on a good food....and he is much more regular....almost clock-like!

The savings on a cheap food end up being 0, and often more $$, than a good food with actual nutrition.

Funny you say that.

My Wife makes stuff for "build your own Burritos"
Black Beans
Ground Turkey
Mexican rice
Jalepenos
tomatos
2 types of Salsa

When done we always make a big Burrito for the dog with whats left.

She just about blew up the garage! Too many black beans!

We have four dogs, one close to sixteen years old, rest all around thirteen. From day one, we have fed them home cooked meals comprising mostly of vegetables, rice and protein in form of meat, eggs and sometimes fish or lentils. They get less protein as they are mostly sedentary. So far it seemed to have worked out quite well.

My grandmother lived to be 99 on a diet of those things, plus some really fatty meat from time to time.

Harry has been on Iams since I got him at 5 months old. Just turned 11 two weeks ago. Went from Puppy, to Adult, to Active Maturity to now Weight Control. Since he's not quite as active as he'd been due to two knee surgeries last year, I don't want him to turn into a fat old man.. He blew both ACL's. Both repaired successfully. He's just a little slow coming up the steps and can't always make the jump onto the couch. Stiull bounds down the steps like a puppy but no great distances when it comes to walks...

When I tell folks that I cook real meat and veggies for my dog, they think I'm crazy. I tell them to read articles like the one cited above and get back to me. Manufactured Dog food is mostly crap, almost literally.

I'll stick with real ground beef, chicken, rice, beans, broccoli, peas, .... As for doggie treats, my dog loves Cheerios.

If you love your pet, feed them good fresh homemade food. It may cost a few extra dollars, take a little more time, but it's well worth knowing your pet is eating well.

Yes , like I posted , My fathers dog died of the dog food poisioning of 2007. Purina claimed all this healthy beefy food when it turns out is was the same crap in the cheapest of dog foods imported from China. Watch a dog die in her favorite chair with yellow skin and eyes with a failing liver and kidneys and you will think twice about store bought mainstream crap.

This is what my fathers's dog ate. Wheat gluten was the prime suspect. http://www.purina.com/company/press/2007/MightyDog.aspx and if you missed it I suggest reading it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_pet_food_recalls

Does it matter what the dog eats when it comes time to pick up the stuff twice a day? I like dogs but I'll never have a dog again. I'm not going to voluntarily pick up dog***** a couple of times a day.
