In all the "Get a Mac" TV commercials over the past few years . . . the only time you see the computer is in the closing shot (exclusively an iMac, not a Mini?), so how is it being marketed as a "fashion accessory?" There's virtually no ads for the Mac Pro. |

Look at the way PC is dressed and then Mac. PC is seen as stuffy, old, and slow whereas Mac is dressed as trendy, hipster, and all around cool. It's the most obvious part of the advertisements. The language and actors who portray them even continue to push that image. Look at this picture of Justin Long ![]() What do you see in this picture of him outside of his "Mac" appearance? You see the type of guy you hang out with on a modern college campus. He's young, hip, in the know, and all around cool. Now look at John Hodgman ![]() John looks like the type of guy I would be giving my Church offerings to. He's professional, nerdy, and oddly resembles a mid 90s Bill Gates. The whole point of the get a mac commercial is to point out the obvious points that Mac's are easy to use and (relatively) problem free. The hidden message is that they are cool and put you in the "in" crowd.

Uh, you didn't get the "Gates - Jobs" parody? And the "gets the girl" part is factual . . . the PC's are all too busy gaming on their rigs and fiddling with their system settings.

Student version download is fubar, but a workaround exists.

MAC's are indeed a fashion accessory for a huge number of people. People that want a real UNIX system run Linux, any variety of versions. I personally use Ubuntu.
Windows 7 is very good, and has features that the MAC OS lacks currently.

I'll keep my macs, I really don't like the windows user interface and I don't have time to play around with linux. I do hope windows 7 does well, primarily to give apple a little nudge. Competition is good.

My main qualm is with the MAC prices....the cheapest of the cheap they offer is the "mac mini" and the baseline one is $599. My much much more powerful system that I built cost quite a bit less, even including my nice 20" LCD. Their bottom end stuff is pricey, but their higher end stuff is just insane. Who pays that much for a computer? If one did a self-build for the $$ that a higher end MAC costs....you could build an absolutely incredibly powerful system + a HUUUGE LCD....and still be within budget. I consider it cheating that their OS is tailored to their own specific line of about 4 variations of computer. When the range of hardware you offer encompasses about 10 options that your own company designed, it better darn well work perfectly. Think of the logistics of what MSoft has to accomplish with drivers and hardware support....when you consider all of that, its astonishing how well Win7 works. (and all of the free Linux distro's as well)
Studies have shown that 33% of MAC households make over 100k a year....vs. only 21% of PC homes. Don't even get me started on the new MAC commercials. They are getting very old.....

i am sick and tired of Apple shoveling their over priced pieces of designer machinery that aren't easily serviced or user serviceable at all for that matter. and sure you can do a lot of cool things with OS X, but thats all you can do, you can't tailor it to your needs.
My consensus is that MACs are for people who don't know how to use computers. and sorry for the mac users here, you are exempt because you are on this forum. and im tired of them shoveling their crap down peoples throats. their stuff is so expensive that if i were to use the money to build my own computer, or buy a windows machine, i would get so much more for my money. and the fact that they continue to get away from this injustice is just wrong

I can never get enough about Mercedes-Benz owners *****in' about the higher prices paid for Apple hardware . . . Everybody knows that a Honda or Toyota is better and more easily tuned and upgraded by teens to be hyper sports sedans . . .

Apparently there are some, a minority, of Win 7 retail customers who are having install issues resulting in an endless loop of reboots and there are students that downloaded their upgrade that have been having issues with some corrupt install files.

The fact that the mac OS is designed to run on very specific hardware is exactly why it works (nearly) perfectly. Maybe that is cheating, so be it. If you want a more open (less expensive) system you have to live with the glitches, that's the trade-off. I don't understand why people get upset by the price of products they don't own, if you think they are too expensive you don't have to buy one. I'm not complaining because I think the new G-class is too expensive, I'm just not going to buy one. Should I be mad at ferrari because most of their customers earn over $1M per year and I could buy a 'vette with similar performance for a lot less money? I do hope that windows 7 works well, lots of folks will be happier without vista. |

Envy? Shirley U. Jest
PC owners have the luxury of paying lower initial costs (except for Operating Systems); having tons of software written for them, including malware and anti-malware; and get to personally interact with customer support staff around the world, well . . . English speaking former British colonies, at least . . . |
