My experience with the flu

This morning, actually all night long, I was dealing with the cold shivers, sweats, aches and misc. symptoms of the flu. I gave up on actually trying to work my way through it and sent this missive to my boss.

Ugggh, I've got it! The creeping assed, head pounding, joint aching, sneezing, sniffleing f'ing flu! I've been up since 3:00 AM trying to feel good enough to go to work but it ain't happening.

The only good thing about having a fever is all the freaky dreams you have and I had some doozies all night long! About 2:00 AM I woke up convinced that if I put some kleenexes in the trunk of my car I'd feel better. Yowzers! THAT was a weird one!

Anyway, I'm down and out for today at least. I'm going back to bed, pulling about 20 blankets over me, eating aspirins like breath mints, drinking fluids and pissing and moaning like a routeman. I figure the woman will cover my face with a pillow and off me before noon.

What actually ended up happening.

This next email I sent details the results of my attempt to beat the flu with, "Rest, drink plenty of fluids and take Bayer aspirin"

Keeerist! I'da been better off going to work to get some rest!

8:30 one of the route guys call with a coolant leak. It just goes to show, "no good deed goes unpunished". Yesterday, because the weather-liars were forecasting "frost warning" conditions, I went around to every truck making sure the heat control valves were working and in the heat position. Sure enough, one of the valves had a bad center core and it started leaking. Had the route man turn it to the "off" position and it quit leaking. Have to change it out tomorrow.

10:30 About the time I took my fourth dose of aspirin, 3rd gallon of orange juice, 5th bowl of chicken soup, got all the dogs settled around me and securely tucked into my blankie on the couch, one of the supervisors called. Route truck is down in Safford (135 miles away). Fuel leak or should I say, fuel gusher. It's not an injection line, the route man checked. Got it sorted out and made arrangements for the driver to use the spare.

11:30 Supervisor called me from Benson to advise me one of the spares wouldn't start but the other one would. No big deal, he was just keeping me informed.

12:00 Gave up on the couch. Between people doing dishes, dogs informing me of every passing bird, people cooking and general household stuff I figured the couch wasn't a good place for a grouchy old fart to try and rest. Went to bed. The woman was in there so I figured a little extra body heat would be good for the shivers. Wasn't to be. She was watching the "Exorcist-First born" or some such crap. About the time I'd drop off to sleep, somebody would be getting possessed, de-possessed or dismembered in some spectacularly noisy fashion. My wacky dreams are bad enough. I didn't need the external stimuli to add to them. Gave up and went back to the couch.

1:00 Just dozing off and I'll be damned if the neighbor didn't come over to see how Joan and I were doing. Snarled some pleasantries at her and went back under the blankets. I imagine she fled screaming in terror.

1:30 Our adopted daughter came home from school and immediately woke me up to see if I needed anything. She didn't burst into flames on the spot so I guess my initial wish didn't come through.

And now, I'm waiting on the wrecker driver to call and inform me he has delivered the route truck to Benson.

I don't give a **** if I have to wear an oxygen tent and an ice suit. I'm going to work tomorrow. This staying home to beat the flu is going to give me pneumonia!

I feel for you. It always seems that when you just want to be left alone you never are...

As for the flu, here is what the Centers for Disease Control asked us at Homeland Security to put up after one of myco-workers came down with Swine Flu.
I would hope tat everybody out there takes this advice...

I'm down for the count too
Working in the medical industry I'm not allowed within 500ft of the place until I'm recovered.

Yup, I know Sunsites. Been there quite a few times. I maintain a fleet of delivery trucks. My territory is everywhere south of Phoenix. I've spent many a wasted hour on old rte. 666/191 between Safford and Douglas. Hit a horse once over in Dragoon. I think I've been in every "wide spot" of the road there is in Cochise, Pinal, Graham, Apache, Pima and Santa Cruz counties.

The next time you see a Hostess Cake-Wonder Bread truck on the side of the road with a guy trying to decide whether to fix it or burn it, stop by and say "Hi"!

I have for years had what I have found the quickest cure for the flu, bad colds as well.

Get into the tub, have the water as hot as you can stand it. I mean boil.
I like it in our whirlpool tub.

Have a cup of hot tea, a bowl of soup something hot to drink / eat while you are in there.
Stay in as long as you can, but do be careful.

Get out, dry off.

Get dressed, best is underwear (shorts and shirt) and a sweat suit.
Dress warm.

Take a good shot of Nyquil.
Get right into bed with an extra blanket
Sometimes I put the heating pad in too, just for a short while.

You wake up drenched, and feeling better.

For a bad one might take 2 nights.

Basically sweat it out.

You may not be ready to go back to work, but won't feel like you want to die.

Oh and plan on changing the bed after a day.

Hot tub, baby! I hit it first thing in the morning and again at about 7:00 at night. 103 degrees, the maximum recommended.

Bed rest and plenty of fluids does the trick but as you may have noticed from my post, the rest was the lacking part today!

I just got over the swine last week, it wasn't the worst flu I've ever had. I second "Kknudson's" recommendation of sweating it out, just be sure you stay hydrated and watch your temp.

My Doctor warned me to stay home for four days after the fever broke as you can still be contagious, also if the fever comes back call the doctor ASAP. I went back to work 72 hours after the fever broke and two people in the office came down with the flu four days later...ooops. They are okay now, but I should have listened to the Dr.

Well under the last Administration we were not so worried about Rebels as we are now...

Actually I work in DC for DHS

Mike,

I always carry matches in my tool bag . . . I'll keep a look out!

I work for our local elementary school as head of transportation, and get to fix our old buses! I also "get to" drive the snotty nosed kids around! Always at least a few that should have stayed home . . . I spend most of the flu season "compromised"

Last week I started with loosing my voice, the stuffy head, temp, cough, runny nose, stomach cramps . . . I only got a light cough and runny nose now! I have been taking the following advise:

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him,is important for all to know

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt)... *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* Neti pots and sinus rinse kits are available at the drug store and relatively inexpensive….under $15.

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

And

This was written by Becky Ransey of Indiana (a doctor's wife), and I want to share it with you. She was over recently for coffee and smelled the bleach I was using to clean my toilet and countertops. This is what she told me...

I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little ole bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. What does bleach cost?

< BR>My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years, and most doctors don't tell you about peroxide. Have you ever smelled bleach in a doctor's office? NO!!! Why? Because it smells, and it is not healthy! Ask the nurses who work in the doctor's offices, and ask them if they use bleach at home. They are wiser and know better!

Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's chlorine, Folks! And it was used to kill our troops. Peroxide was invented during WWI in the 20's. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals. Please think about this.

1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mou th for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I bathe.) No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash.

2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs.

3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters.

4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.

5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.

6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide.

7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will.

8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils wit h your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue.

9 If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.

10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, reddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change.

11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus, or other skin infections.

12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour it directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

13. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors. There is no smearing, which is why I love it so much for this.
