Universal garage door opener

A client wants me to find a new remote for her older model garage door opener. It's a Chamberlain and they say on their site that they do not support pre '93 openers because the new ones are safer, better, and they make more money that way. Well, they're probably right.

This one must be older than that as it has no light beam tripping switch. Her children are adults so she's happy to have the older style.

I found this site for a universal remote - they say it covers Chamberlain:

Anybody ever try this route? Not sure how you'd get the old receiver to communicate with the new sender but there must be a procedure for that.
