Point is already taken and I already thanked you in an earlier post for that perspective I had not yet seen. It was an elderly man whom my sister hit.

According to my father you would never have made it. Those who only looked out for only them selves did not fair very well.

I would be curious to know why though. Call it intellectual curiosity. My theory is that in a forced situation that is as bad as that, the group mode might be alright. Of course, I have also heard of a lot of stories where it is every man for himself when things go worse. Still, good thing I am not there at that time but my point was simple. What do you think of all the human splendor at that time? Or in Stalin's Gulag or Uncle Mao's Reeducation Centers to name a few? Maybe in those situations they were forced to pool together. However, since we are here and not there, the need to pool together and take care of each other isn't as strong or present in many situations.

I mean, if I could be sure you had my back if I watched yours, it could work. The wife and I have that relationship so I know it works. OTOH, I don't see society as having my back which explains my lack of enthusiasm for having anyone's back by mine and my little circle.

Sounds like your sister is a hero, I'd be proud! Glad to hear your nephew is ok. Jim pretty much hit the nail on the head with what to do. He really is a pro when it come to this kind of thing. Best of luck with dealing with the fall out from this. I'm sure your sister will be back behind the wheel of a Mercedes soon.

Makes me think of this ad... the engineers really knew what they were doing then they made these cars.

Considering what decent W201's go for these days, it may not be the best idea to repurchase the wreck without fully knowing what it will take to fix. Your sister could be in line for an upgrade.

How about a 202 or better yet a 210? I have owned all 3 of them and love them

I was thinking of just repurchasing it (if it's not too much) then parting it out. I don't think it's a good idea either to repair this considering the amount of damage it has incurred.

This was actually her upgrade, from the '92 Corolla she drove. Found new scratches on that and this 190E had more scratches, so we got this for her to drive, then this happened. I want to retire the Corolla already, it already has 259k miles and doesn't run like it did before.

If the insurance settles for some good money, we'll see where this goes.

Not knowing the nature of the parts that remain, I would likely advise that parting out a W201 that isn't a 2.3-16 or specialty tuned version, probably isn't going to be financially rewarding and then you're left with the bones.

I wouldn't repair or part it out. You would need a garage space and tools and have to screw with it for a while and the parts are not specifically valuable so why bother? Take your money and run.

Sorry about your sister and her car, MBeige.

To the "other" discussion...I wouldn't wish death or maiming on anyone, reguardless of my religious beliefs (athiest).

Thanks for the advise, I know you guys mean well, but what I meant was to part it out for my use, to transplant parts into the other 190E. My uncle recently just bought a 190E also, so he might need parts. I'd rather that the good parts be used than be sent to the crusher.

If it is for personal use and you have a garage to strip it down an a means of disposal of the remains, with time on your hands and storage for the good parts, why not?

I just got word that the punk in the Acura Integra that hit our 190E did not have insurance, or probably had expired insurance (technically, no insurance). Ugh! What to do now? Get the police report and file a claim against the kid?

Get a police report. Does your sister have underinsured coverage? Check with the agent. Fine a report so that you can sue him for as much damages as possible or the deductible. In WI, a legal judgment is good for 20 years so you can send it to the collection agency. This will affect his credit should he try to buy another car or rent a house or get a job.

How about uninsured motorist coverage.
