Yes, I'm quite well aware not everyone that uses "Dr." in front of their name is a doctor of medicine. I was simply pointing out, and others have now as well, that doctors of sorts besides medicine seem to introduce themselves as doctor and want to let everyone know that they are a "doctor".

There are some medical doctors that are arrogant in this manner as well. But, it seems to me many non-medical doctors insist upon using Dr. in front of their name. That is my only point.

My buddy's PhD in Chemistry took him 7 years to do. He was making molecules one by one, attaching individual atoms to each other and making nano-somethings with them!

That kind of knowledge deserves respect and I am happy to call him Dr if he wants it.

But then, I believe that other professions should use titles to acknowledge the accomplishments of other people, including trades: mason, carpenter, welder, mechanic, etc.

In the old days in factories, what we now call the Manufacturing #Engineering Mgr. used to be called the Master Works Mechanic or MWM.

I'll give anybody who has earned it (not bought it) their due.

My old man hates the title game. He's retired Air Force (29 years active duty), and once, when the president of the local university introduced himself as "Dr. so-and-so," Dad, extended his hand and said, "General so-and-so, but you can call me Dan; pleased to meet you." They worked together professionally for some time, and did become pretty good friends. Love that story.

Most of the (non-academic) PhDs that I know avoid using any title. I frequently refer to a couple of them as "doctor" just to bust their chops. It's pretty silly to call yourself doctor when half the people in the room are also PhDs.

One of my university professors started the semester by telling the class that anyone calling him doctor would have his appendix removed. In my experience, most really accomplished people do not need to use titles; most are on a first name basis with everyone.

Since I only completed graduate studies, should I expect everyone to call me "Master"?

What I notice is the ones with class don't.

That said, some of them go hog wild with the whole "Dr." deal. When my older Brother got his doctorate, he stoked the "Dr. Bandwagon" in every conceivable means possible. All return address labels, all suffixes he could find and sent in a blurb to his private school's alumni news he attended as a teenager. I wouldn't be surprised if it's on his mailbox and checks.

What if you have multiple PhD's?? Do you become Dr. Dr. Jones....or Dr's Jones?? I mean really, if they have put in that much effort, we should really come up with a way to let bystanders on the subway know just how educated that person is.....

I don't get why M.D.'s have the privelege of calling themselves Dr. when nobody else who earns a doctorate does...Double standard much? I am on a first name basis with most of my professors, they don't like being singled out or self-aggrandizing by having the prefix.
