Hispanics are a sub race?

The census arrived and Hispanics are not considered a "race". So what are they and why are they not a "race"? What is a "race"?

That's an ethnic group since you can have white Hispanics and Black Hispanics.

From Questions and Answers for Census 2000 Data on Race:

Quote:
Question: How does the Census Bureau define race and ethnicity?

Answer: Census Bureau complies with the Office of Management and Budget's standards for maintaining, collecting, and presenting data on race, which were revised in October 1997. They generally reflect a social definition of race recognized in this country. They do not conform to any biological, anthropological or genetic criteria.

In accordance with the Office of Management and Budget definition of ethnicity, the Census Bureau provides data for the basic categories in the OMB standards: Hispanic or Latino and Not Hispanic or Latino. In general, the Census Bureau defines ethnicity or origin as the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person 's parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States. People who identify their origin as Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino may be of any race.

According to the revised Office of Management and Budget standards noted above, race is considered a separate concept from Hispanic origin (ethnicity) and, wherever possible, separate questions should be asked on each concept.

Hmmm. While my ancestors were conquering Greece, Spain, Gaul, Brittania, Egypt, Judea, etc; they spoke Latin. Does that make me Latino?

Sure why not. I like how most middle eastern ethnicities are lumped into the "white" category. I don't really care one way or the other but when applying for scholarships and other crap where you get in based on race, it would help to differentiate sometimes.

My race is "Other".

There was a story in my school's paper about how a lot of students (myself included) put other down as their race. When the results were published, it threw off a lot of what the college wanted to plan for in terms of ALANA enrollment.

Either way I don't care. I always pick other when it comes to race.

Not sure that the census is in tune with the rest of the USA. Hispanics are treated as a race in most other ways from what I see. How many races are there? What is the purpose of gathering race information? How long does a person have to trace their ancestors back to be considered from a continent, area or country? RE white south africans, blacks in the Caribbean, etc. I need a new census form. I have to put "other" on all my forms now, I'm adopted and do not know what my origins are, I just guess, and so I will not guess anymore. My real guess is that it's all about the money.

Ok. I work for a regional Agency on Aging (OSA). The database we use is called NAPIS - and "Hispanic" is indeed a distinct check-box, but it is classified as ethnic race. The other ethnicity in that section is "Latino". It's very confusing.

I just queried our OMB document database and returned this:

Question: How does the Census Bureau define race and ethnicity?

Answer: Census Bureau complies with the Office of Management and Budget's standards for maintaining, collecting, and presenting data on race, which were revised in October 1997. They generally reflect a social definition of race recognized in this country. They do not conform to any biological, anthropological or genetic criteria.

If Hispanics are not a race, then what race are they? White? Black? Asian? (is that a race? what about asians that have not lived in asia for three generations? Are they Nayasians?) Native Alaskan? (What about black folks that moved to alaska and had a child born there- now what is that child a Blaskan? ) Why does the gov even ask for race?

Hispanic is an ethnic catagory. I don't see what the problem is, 'specially since those whining about it are prolly not "Hispanic". I think individuals from all 3 major racial groups can be found in the population considered to be Hispanic.

Confuse the people and get more accomplished !!??

For the American census as well as schools etc. how about this template :

Race : Human (quoting Jive trky )

Ethnicity : American

Color : depends on season

Throw some confusion back at them !!

Mi esposa dice : ? "Esta bien "?

(Along with a lot of other words some english some spanish that would probably get me banned. I think the sub race thing touched a nerve. )
