Need College Decision Advice: SIT, RPI, WPI

I've applied to college and I've gotten into Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Northeastern University, Stevens Institute of Technology, University of Vermont, and the Polytechnic Institute of NYU (formerly Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute) and I got wait-listed at RPI (which I think I'll get into, because I really expected to get in, it must have been close). I'm least considering UVM and NYU. Is anyone currently attending or a recent graduate of any of these? I'm particularly concerned with the three in the title.

Graduated from RPI in 2007 (BSME).

What do you want to know?

I'm a ME (from 30 years ago), but I don't have any current info. RPI had a very good reputation back then.

okyoureabeast--maybe I should have, but I don't think I would have gotten in. I'm not exactly the best student.

jgranzier--I'm a little past that stage. I was thinking about it, but I was already applying to 10 schools. One of my friends is probably going there, though. And I think all of those apply to NU also. Thanks.

With the retrospect of almost 40 years in the workplace - I would go with the cheapest out-of-pocket dollars, and best overall education available school - amongst the schools considered.

No one in my industry asks; "where you went to school?" Everyone in my industry asks; "how well can you do the job?"

Well, I do not go to WPI, but I have 2 friends who did/do. From what I hear, it is a LOT of work. I guess it also depends on the major, and how well you learn, and what professors you get...and it is college, so you should be working hard anyway.

Did you actually visit any of the colleges? Talk to people who go there, check out their websites. That might help with your decision. Whichever one feels most suitable for you.

Alright, been doing more research. Looks like I've got it down to Northeastern, SIT and Brooklyn Polytech. I get another round of decision making if I get into RPI.

Does anyone know anything about Brooklyn Polytech, or went there? I know almost nothing about it, but they gave me a pretty big scholarship. I'm looking at that and RPI this weekend and then I've got to make my decision by the 30th.

Any Stevens graduates out there? I could use an inside opinion there.

Agreed. Little off topic for the OP, but that's one of the prime reasons we came to Texas from NJ. Besides the attitude and cost of living, education was a motivator. My partner went to WPU in NJ for undergrad. NYU and CUNY were considerations for his Masters. He will graduate from U of T - Arlington next spring with his Masters in Cultural Anthropology & Sociology. All told, his Masters will have cost less than 3 semesters of undergrad in NJ, let alone what NYU & CUNY cost..

I'm several decades obsolete, but I have about 100 credits from Poly. [I also have 20 or so credits from RPI]

The main campus is at Metrotech, downtown Brooklyn [the old Schick Razor blade factory building]

They have satellite campuses in Mellville and Westchester.

Poly is _not_ a residential school [They had _one_ dorm, back when the LI campus was in Farmingdale [that site is now a WalMart].

RPI has a traditional campus, with extensive campus life. Things like the radio station and the field house [RPI Hockey] are owned by the Student Union - not the school itself. [The Union Rathskeller used to serve beer to anyone with a school ID - including 16 year old freshmen like me ;-/ ]

There [were] three major dorm areas:

the old quadrangle [with names like Hall Hall, and Haraei Hall [named for the designer of the Zero fighter]]

Mount Frosh - The 'Freshman Dining Hall' , and a surrounding group of dorms .

Burdette Avenue Residence Hall - small dorm, with it's own attached cafeteria.

Uphill from that [toward the field house] were rental apartments / grad student housing.

Alright, I went and looked at NYU poly yesterday. Not a fan of the urban "campus," although the dorms were awesome because they were pretty much apartments. I also learned that they don't have a co-op program, so that's a big downer. I just received, however, a $14,000/yr scholarship from Stevens (as opposed to $16,000 from Poly), and I liked Stevens a lot better than Poly and I think it's a better school. I think it's down to Northeastern (which I cannot hear too many good things about) and Stevens before I hear back from RPI, which I look at tomorrow.
