Timex Ironman - I've got a quite serious running addiction, so it sees a lot of use. Frankly I also like it's lowbrow image. I'm very much against conspicuous consumption, so anything fancier is offputting to me.

Longines....Have to wind it every morning when I put it on. My parents gave it to me in 1952, as a graduation present. Looks like this is the first Longines listed on this thread.

Collect watches too...

My two Rolexes were bought new in the '70s for around $350 each...and one was a Submariner.

Have about 20 classic Hamiltons (which I liken to my Packard) and as many Omegas from the '40s-'50s, plus a few examples of other makes...good quality, but nothing offensively expensive.

Divide mechanical things into "living machinery" and "dead machinery." Mechanical watches and old cars are living machinery, new cars and quartz watches are dead.

Rolex anyone ?

Just want to share with you something I read years ago on a GQ magazine.

On it there was an article about watches and when they name Rolex, their introduction was very particular:

"A Rolex is like having a Mercedes grabbed around your wrist"

I loved that expression and always remembered it !

Talking Watches--->

I wear a Fossil Steel Blue chronograph. It's water proof and I do not ever remove it. I swim, bathe, sleep, work on the rover everything with it on. It is very durable, that is what I expect from my vehicle. No fun wearing a watch that you have to remember not to get wet, or bang it against anything. Plus it has a 7 year no questions asked warranty.

I wear my fathers antique gold Gruen, circa 1941, that he wore as a bomber pilot during the second world war; amazingly, a wind up watch that still ticks and begs the question: why do we fill our garbage dumps with batteries when wind-up watches work fine...they may not have the accuracy to the 100 ths of seconds , but really im not a formula one driver requiring this level of precision.

I have a few watches.

Usually for work, I wear the cheap $80.00 seiko or the $20.00 lorus that I picked up just because I am always damaging something or another on them anyway when working, so why use an expensive watch. And they both look good.

Otherwise I wear my Fred, or The Cartier Santos when I am out. I love the cartier, too bad its not real... yet. hehe but it sure looks damn good. The Fred is a very nice watch, gold and silver two tone, witha white dial, and a blue leather strap, but I change the strap depensing on what I am wearing. RIght now its a brown snakeskin strap.

Now if only I had my father's watches, he has quite a collection of beautiful antique and new high class watches.

I personally love Cartier Santos and Panther as my favorite whatches.

Someday I plan on having a nice omega Seamaster and a rolex oyster perpetual in the collection, but there are so many other important things to buy first.. hehe

Alon

I'll post some pics of the watches sooner or later.

Personally, I'm kind of a watch collector, owning at least 50 watches.

My daily wearer is a Tag Heuer SE/L two-tone with gray face. I also have two Rolex Datejust watches. They both have the two-tone (SS/18k) Jubilee bracelets and standard bezels. One has a standard champagne dial with diamond hour markers and other a custom tuxedo-pinstripe ivory face and standard hour markers.

My prize possession is a recently-acquired Rolex President. Solid 18k band and case. Black face with diamond hour markers, standard bezel. Almost too nice...it's only been on my wrist twice.

Also have 6 assorted Gucci watches, 9000M, 3000M, 3300M, etc. Several others as well.

I've been looking for a 18k Daytona with blace or MOP face. Not adverse to pre-owned, as the waiting list for the watch I'm looking for is around 9 months (I've been told).

Thumbs up German Cars and German Watches

A few years ago you couldn't have compared a German with a Swiss watch. Now the best from Glasutte and Pforzheim compare with the best from Geneva and the Jura valley.

Dare to compare A. Lange & Sohne with Patek Philippe as equals in the field of manufacturers? Darn right! Glasutte Original with Jaeger LeCoultre...definately. Union with Girard Perregaux...maybe (I own two GPs).

How about classics that can still be found at great prices, like Junghans beautiful caliber J-88 chronograph, which is the equal of the legendary Valjoux calibers.

Until last year Rolex was using the Zenith El Primero chronograph movement in the Daytona and could not be called a complete "manufacturer". They've fixed that problem and their Oyster Perpetual Datejust rightly deserves International Wristwatch Magazine's title of Wristwatch of the Century.

My ultimate wrist candy for a Mercedes-Benz owner is a German manufactured-watch (my wife, however, has this bizarre fasination with inanimate crystals). You could go halfway and get the Audermars Piguet wristwatch where the solid gold dial is embossed with a picture of a 560SEC. About $26,000.

Of course, what you wear (or don't wear) is your own darn business!!

I'm hard on watches, too. Previous career as UPS delivery guy demolished two crystal faces at $300 apiece. So now i don't wear a watch when working on cars or being active!

I wear a G-shock, toughest watch made that i have worn. Ive swim triathons, run marathons, and put that watch through a lot of abuse. It has a thermometer built into display. Best $70 spent on a watch. Have a Swiss Army officers watch i will wear when dressed up, which is rare!

This thread started by noting the several watches in a Mercedes catalogue available from dealerships, selling mb varia from teddy bears to mountain bikes (with mb logo, $5000). The watches range from $80 - $1000 Canadian and of course feature the star logo and style from high tech to elegant formal wear.

One photo features Clint Eastwood sporting the logo (though it looks like the mb logo got photoshopped onto Clints shirt, but mb probably paid a fortune to use his image).

has anyone ordered one of these watches? are they crap with an mb logo slapped on? or are they decent?

I wear a Coach stainless-steel blueface watch I recently bought. Its made by Movado, has that classic styling, and comes in at just under 500 bucks. A bargain, if you ask me. I'm biased, though, because I love Coach products.

A worthy watch website...

Some of you may wish to look at www.timezone.com which has bulletin boards on a number of watch brands, general watch subjects, vintage watches, a sales corner, and a "water cooler" where many topics, including cars, are discussed.

Enjoy!
