Oh Noes! Pork Belly Futures Hit All Time High

Makin' Bacon Just Keeps Getting More Expensive

On the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the cost of pork bellies, which are used to produce bacon, has risen by more than 65% in the last 12 months and the wholesale price of pig product hit $1.35 per pound last week – its highest on record.

Food has gone to crap! I'm not to proud of it, but I was feeling lazy last week and bought a box of Banquet chicken. These are the drumsticks that came in it:

For reference that is a roll of quarters.

I'm somewhat disturbed by the thought of what kind of chicken these came from.

Truly you don't get what you pay for anymore.

I'm glad I had those pork belly tacos (@Nada in Cinnci) when I did! I love me some pork belly products! I've got a new goal for my change jar.

Reluctantly- it was late, I was tired. More of a Whole Foods shopper (or Kroger natural foods since it's largely the same brands without rhe Whole Foods tax)

My point though was that's where the nitrite laden bacon is headed, same price for half as much and worse quality. ;-)

LMAO - There would have been more flavor and far better nutrition, not to mention they would have been cleaner than any crap produced by ConAgra. ;-) Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if and/or why there has been such an increase in the demand for bacon?

Hog farms cut back their herd sizes over the last two years due to grain prices and that idiotic swine flu scare. For a while there pork was almost free in the grocery stores. Reduced supply + increased summer demand = pay thru the snout.
Chicken, in all it's industrial forms, is a poisonous tragedy, especially when raising your own is so easy, even in a small back yard.

Right now (as of last night) the price for a pound of bacon (sliced anyway) is running about $4.00 (+/- $0.25).

That's for the cheap chit (pun intended).

The premium? Try around $5.50 or more...

I'll be dreaming of bacon...unless someone is handing it out as a sample someplace...
