Just spoke with someone from DMV and they did receive my TRASFER NOTICE, However, it was received and processed on 11/10/10 and the ticket was issued on 11/05/10. GRRRRR.

She told me I did everything on my end but to date their record shows no indication that new owner has come forward to register the car to complete the transfer. GRRRRRRR.

Now I will have to go to a DMV office and pay $5 to get a transcipt of the transfer notice, but first I will have to call the LA Parking office to see if that is acceptable proof.

I'm just glad that DMV received my TRANSFER NOTICE.

Having a scanner at your home saves alot on running around and getting copies of this or that.

In my case of selling the Monte Carlo to the SOL, I made copies of everything the two of us touched or signed...she got a set and the originals, I got my set and kept what I was entitled (pardon the pun) to.

Over the years, I've bought and sold enough stuff I'm pretty sure what the "man" wants. And I like the idea that my @55 is still more important to me than the guy I'm selling my car/motorcycle/whatever to. He could care less about me. Well, same back at him.

So, with the handshake and an envelope full of signed documents, we do part. HE has all the keys, title and car, I have a clear mind and my papers.

And when the State turns on a fan and wants to spread their "cheer" my way, I show them what I have and re-direct the fan and its contents to the person responsible for the State's uneasiness.

BTW: Never think this is the end of the story. I don't have any tax records going back past 2002, but I have a drawer full of copies of past vehicles I've owned for the past 37+ years just due to the fact that I have NO IDEA when the State (or any State for that matter), will "officially" get you off the "owner's" list of said vehicles.

But...if you should ever happen to see a red, 2dr., '61 Volvo Penta 544, with a "slightly toasted" hood (on the driver's side) involved in a shoot-out along some highway out in Looneywood, CA., please rest assured that I don't own that particular automobile anymore...I have proof and I'll be able to show you!!!

The only thing you could have done in that case was to send that document via USPS, Registered, Return Receipt Requested and kept all THAT paperwork associated with the letter to prove date of mailing. They stamp all that data on all that paperwork.

To use a scene from "A Miracle on 34th Street" when the line of postmen come into the court and drop all the mail in front of the bench, what more proof do you need than the "officialness" of the USPS?

Unless he sold his car to Santa Claus, that probably won't work.

I'd rather pay $55 vs. going to court.

When did you sell the car and when did you send the transfer notice? (In Washington called the "Seller's report of sale")

THe Parking office does not accept a transfer transcript from the DMV; it needs to be a copy of the actual transfer notice. So now I have to pay DMV $20 to get a copy of the original transfer notice. How could I be so stupid as to send it out without making a copy. I usually do these sort of precautions.

Once that's in my hands, I can send it to the Parking office in LA, but it's not over yet. They have to do an investigation to see who is actually responsible. Oh, the hassle. I'm not mad at DMV or the Patking office. Just the idiot buyer for not even having the courtesy and responsibility to transfer the title to his name.

Lesson learned. MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING!

You will have to start with calling them and expect them to sit there and moan that you need to pay it. Don't get upset with them because there is nothing the person you are talking to can do about it.

Next write a letter to the DMV or whomever it was that issued the ticket and tell them the circumstances. Expect them to send you a letter saying you need to pay it.

You might just give the ticket to the person that should have received it and tell her to pay it and to also get the title changed over.

I ran into something like this on a car I sold 16 years ago. The DMV said I could get out of it only if I could provide proof that the car had been destroyed.

Since the car had been used in a film where it was blown to pieces during a stunt I sent them a copy of the film and told them where to watch.

I received a letter a few weeks later saying the matter had been dropped.

Odd...same thing happened to me in CA a while back (red light camera nailed the buyer in my old car), and the ticket had a place to indicate any new owner information. I did so on the ticket, mailed it in, and received notice the ticket had been dismissed...not sure if they refiled against the new owner or not.

Regardless, those in CA can avoid any such hassle as the OP went through...as you can now notify DMV immediately online when selling a vehicle. Last vehicle I sold, the info was entered after the new owner drove away.
