I don't own one I don't need it. I have a couple sport jackets a Zegna and Brooks Brothers for formals at the Yacht Club but that's about it.

If you want to run in those circles spend the money on a good tux, most people don't so they just rent them. Its not your friends fault that they don't have them, if they want to hang with you at the parties they will purchase them, if not they won't.

I used to go to a few socials yearly, so after the first year, the tux was paid for. I occasionally would get a new shirt and a set of cuff links and buttons that matched and it looked pretty spiffy for little money

Now is a GREAT time to buy a tux, you can get a 500.00 one for maybe 75-100 NEW.

This is the dry season for tuxes everywhere except Cali. get someone to buy one that is one size too big, get it sent to you, then have it tailored.

And get a tie that you can tie, not one of those cheesy clip-ons.

Every woman that I have ever taken out in a formal except one noticed the tie and was amazed I could tie it.

Go to a bow tie shop, they give free lessons.

Roger that on the tie it yourself bow tie. cummerbund, if worn, should be tasteful and small.

I like tuxes, I like cool occasional clothes. I also had a set of dress blues, mess dress blues and mess dress whites. When the occasion called for it, there was nothing better....

My problem is that I can't seem to stay at one weight. It varies +/- 30 lbs. from year to year, season to season.

Cheap rental tuxes and suits look exactly that. Cheap. A good shop will be able to hook you up with a quality one. Fortunately for me, there's a good shop in town. Including weddings and funeral, I have to wear a suit 2 or 3 times a year. If I factor dry cleaning in, it's a wash...har har...rent vs. own.

It's $150 to rent a tux for a few days, so if you bought one for under a grand it would pay for itself assuming you have a social life.
