We do many things without compensation as our overall incomes in retirement are still far more than are required. If we were poor we would perhaps not have the lattitude to directly help people as well but our attitudes would remain. .. . Overall our general attitudes have paid off with time I feel for us in spades.

Now if we lived in a heavily populated area these attitudes would not fly. Or only fly with much greater difficulty. I really believe we would be visualised as a mark or sucker or some other uncomplementary terminology.

Remember as well most people are pretty laid back here. They are smart enough to avoid things and situations that produce stress and other undesirable effects.

Most things in life we can put some form of price on. This laid back lifestyle in the general population is one item that you cannot. It almost does not exist where we originate from. We have a minority of type A personalities.

I do think as well that being more ruthless basically we would have aquired much more power. One reason we did not adopt that approach is knowing that we probably would get older someday. Plus I like people and so does the wife.

Again fortunatly there are many exceptions to the general rule that nice guys finish last. It may require special circumstances though.
I'm not disputing that there are exceptions but I generally don't bet on the long shot horse or the exception. I start by being nice fully believing that you are going to be scum. Soon as you show the signs, I am ready and prepared for your nonsense. I feel it minimizes disappointment since you can only exceed my expectations. When I was younger, I believed in people and got more kicks in the shorts. At some point, I learned.

Contradictory statements. You first start off saying you get no compensation and later on it pays off in spades. It either does or does not. And when I say compensation, it isn't always monetary. Payment in a different coin is still payment. I give money to a hooker. She pays me back in other ways that are not monetary, for instance.

In a small area, you are too well known to pull these stunts unless you don't care if you are ostracized or you are so rich and powerful it doesn't matter. In heavier populated areas, I might shaft you and we don't see each other every day so it is ok. As I have said, I believe people are basically bad and when given the chance, they will become bad. In a small community, they are not given the chance. In a huge town, sure.

True however you have to feel good about that lifestyle. My wife quit a better paying and more easy job because she didn't like it that way. She wanted more excitement. Ask her if she wants to work in a clinic or in the ER and she wants the ER even if both pay the same or the ER pays a little less.

Sounds like you are worried about the day when you are not alpha dog. Again, in a small town, it might work. In a larger city, when you are not the fawker you are the fawkee.

It will require that special circumstance. On a side note, why do you think we need religion? IMO, it is to scare people into believing that they will be punished no less than once. Escape punishment in this life and you still will be zinged in the next. Fail to escape and you will be punished twice. That, I believe is our attempt at trying to created that special circumstance.

Some of your points are very salient. You are absolutly right that to shaft someone locally would not be a good ideal to say the least. Similarily for an individual to try the same on you is unlikely.

In Toronto nicknamed hogtown where we originated many years ago this behaviour is normal. Getting worse all the time. There your perspective on human nature is not too far off the mark.

Living here is somewhat like a time warp. .Many old values and ideals have not been disgarded or erroded yet. Why change them as they still work? There are many reasons this is so. Social progress has not been all that successful in society when examined against what is here.

Many things here may be as they were a hundred years ago. For example there has been for all practical purposes no immigration here other than the very few like us. This has been the way for a very very long time.

As for organized religeon it is shrinking fast and deservidly so. There has been historically too much wrong done in it's name. At one time it may have helped with social structure but far less today. . If a person chooses to believe I will not try to convince them otherwise.

To me it is like an emotional blackmail. Whatever the belief if you do not comply you are essentially hell bound. The majority of us were going anyways if you believe.

I even would like to see the catholic organization thrown out of north america for criminal activity. Molestation of children is too high on my personal list of crimes to ignore. I really have no sympathy regardless for any perpetrators in this area. The more time goes on the more proof is that it was endemic within their organization and more or less approved of up into the 1970s at least. Of course that is not going to happen but should.

Nate, you should have gotten out of the Jeep, fallen down on the snow, went to the hospital for a "check out" (different from a "check up") and waited for the chick's insurance company to contact you...any hospital visit is a 5-figure payout with the insurance companies. You could have coughed, squinted, pissed your pants, farted "Yankee Doodle" and that would have had the cop making sure you RODE to the hospital in an ambulance...those suckers are a $1K just to start the engine and turn on the lights/siren.

You missed it this time...next time...just fall down.
I hope you were joking.

Insurance fraud is a serious crime and costs us all in terms of increased premiums.

I am joking...and yes...I know about the fraud and criminality of doing so...and the increased premiums. It's just the way the insurance companies settle cases that makes me wonder who really is committing the fraud...they screw you right away or screw you SLOOOOWWWWLLLLYYYY....over time...with higher premiums and lower protection.

Just a comment on the times...
