Lightning struck our garage to which the family dog was chained. The lightning followed the chain out to the dog and melted the choke collar off its neck. The chain links were fused to gether in pieces about 4-5 ft long.
The dog survived and lived for many years after, but was not ever quite the same as before.

Holly cow, that's crazy!

Here some lightning facts..
http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_pls/probability.html

Quote:
Lightning Strike Probabilities

1. ASSUME -

4 CG flashes/km2/yr/average

House is 10 X 20 m2 = 200 m2

Direct strike to house when lightning hits within 10 m

Predicted strike (1200 X4)/1 000 000 =

4.8 X 10 -3 or once ea. 200 years

Therefore - 1 out of 200 house will be struck per year.

2. ASSUME -

USA population = 280,000,000

1000 lightning victims/year/average

Odds = 1 : 280,000 of being struck by lightning

Most dogs are very well adjusted... so he did not need much changing .... just a few electrons realigned in his telencephalon.

to follow up, it turns out that there is some residual damage from this. The cable guy called it "electrical overpressure" or some such.

The cable internet, alarm system and some lighting in the house is not working correctly after this, and the electrical cook top (counter inset unit), microwave, and fridge are dead or on the fritz.

There were 4 cable splitters on that side of the house, (two tvs for two cable setups/ potential two tenants) and all 4 of them are fried. According to the cable guy, splitters are especially at risk to lighting strikes, and often go bad. After he fixed/re routed he traced damaged coaxial cable all the way back to the pole, 100 feet away! He had to replace over a hundred feet of coaxial, from the pole back to the house

Internal components of the fridge, cooktop, and microwave seem to be bad, ive had the electrician here checking the wiring and more importantly the heating and cooling system for damage which seem to be ok, and power is good right up to these items. They are all from 1993, so I wonder whats common.

what a PITA
