Mystery finds - Backyard Archeology

After yanking some overgrown shrubbery in the yard a couple mystery items were found. I would be interested in your opinion.

The first one looks like a coathanger bent in loops. Since it has been in the ground for a long period of time I am guessing a rug beater.

The second item is some kind of fastener with chains. My initial impression was part of a tire chain.

Second item is indeed tire/snow chains. Would have had a heavy cotton web belt extending from one of the ends. This belt would be inserted through a slot in the steel wheel between the hub and rim sections, and tightened to hold in place. Usually four of these chain sets would have been used per wheel. Idea was they were easy, if time consuming, to install in the snow. Used to have some around here somewhere......

Never seen tire chains like that. Only ones that go around the entire tire.

Chains were common when I was a kid in the South Bend area...snow belt. Everybody carried them in the winter. I remember dad putting them on in the snow. There was a way to attach one side and drive them on then hook the other side.
