That's why we haven't had an execution in Canada since the early 60's. There have been some fairly high profile mistakes made in the past few years and the State paid for those mistakes.

However, there are those exceptions where a lot of people here might enjoy a neck tie party.....

Paul Bernardo comes to mind. He and his wife Carla raped and killed two young school girls and Paul is believed to have raped many more. Carla testifed for the crown but was later found to be complicit. She got 12 years ( I think ) and he's still behind bars in solitary. He gets one hour outside his cell each day. He will never get out of prison, ever.

It gets better. The police missed video tapes hidden in a light fixture in the couple's house but were turned in by his lawyer of all people. The tapes showed one girl being raped repeatedly for days by both of them and the girl begging for her life. One girl was found naked in a wooded area and the other was found in a lake. She had been cut up and encased in concrete. A fisherman somehow snagged a piece and that's how they found her - cut up by a chain saw and put in cement. Try that one for public outcry.

I saw on the news yesterday that Jerry Springer has offered her $1million for her and her family to be on his show. I suspect she is kinda trashy.

Nice summary of the Prosecution's case.
You forgot that other people testified that there was no foul odor in the car during the same general time line.

No argument about the poor victim.

Apparently, since being given a future isn't the same as compensation for the past.

So, smart enough to get picked for this particular jury duty?

Circle of life . . . the only reason for it is that there's an audience. An audience that seems to rabidly consume stories about the misfortunes of middle class Caucasian young women.

I saw the MSNBC show about them. Whoa, some deviant and ugly shyte all right. Was that the case where she "gave" him her younger sister and they accidentally killed her in the process? I didn't trust her victim routine one bit.

Maybe life in solitary is better punishment than death.

Yeah, that's right, I forgot about that part. I guess Carla worked at a vet clinic where she stole some strong pills and then gave them to her little sister. She OD'd but no one suspected anything so they got away with it. Either during or after the trial they exhumed her body and found heavy traces of some sort of seditive in her. Apparently, Carla gave her sister to Paul as a Christmas present but she gave her too many pills and she died in the process.
During the trial there were women ( lots of them ) who were shouting out how they were in love with Paul who was a very good looking guy. Every day there would be a hord of them outside the court house waiting for his arrival. The bastard probably pleaded not gulity just so he could relive all of the sorid moments. It had to be living hell for the families and parents, one of which lost their only child.
They played the video tapes in court. Poor mother and father got to watch Carla in on the act and it didn't show where she was being forced to do anything as she had the Crown believing. They had to honour her plea bargan and she did spend 12 years in a Quebec jail. I heard she had a number of '' girlfriends '' watch her back.
She seems to have fallen off the radar after being released a few years ago. I think Paul is still in Kingston in solitary confinment. He'd be dead the first day if hey put him into the general population.

No one talks about them much any more. The house they lived in where the crimes took place was torn down becuse no one wanted to go near it and a parade of people drove by every day to have a look.
We used to hang people here - too good for that sort of scum. Life in prison with no chance of parole will have to do.

That must also be the Jerry Springer, National Inquirer et al, audience.

Hard to say. Your question is too open ended. If the choice is life with no possibility of parole or parole will be when I am 99 yo, absolutely. I'd rather be dead

If you're that concerned about the lifers' emotional well-being, then you could give a life sentence with the inmate being given a suicide capsule to use at their discretion.

I'm not and yes, they should have that option. I always believed that if you say it is your life, it is yours to do with as you please.

My point was that by taking a perp's life you are doing the same thing IN P{PRINCIPLE as incarceration from the standpoint that you are taking something you can never give back. The only difference being that the punishers can talk themselves into believing that if a mistake was made, they can make it right by tossing the ex-perp, current victim a few bucks, sweep it under the rug and go home to bed.
