Yeah if you are working from scratch and working to crack one secret file it seems like a lot of effort - but think if you have hundreds / thousands / hundreds of thousands of secret files to crack... makes the effort worth while.

Right... NSA has hardware accelerated machines designed for speed that can crack the toughest encryption in hours that would take others years to crack. The bad guys may be smarter but they don't usually don't have the money to purchase the level of hardware that it would take to crack strong encryption. And if they do they are probably sponsored by another government.... and then - what would they stand to gain by cracking David's or my password files?! Don't make much sense unless the information you're after is so valuable that you are willing to spend huge amounts of money to gain it. Again - the question is what's the value of getting at it...

I am thinking that the guys who break into my house and steal my computer are not going to have the resources much less the knowledge to hack the encryption.

If you forget that one password you are royally screwed.
Just keep the list in a discreet place, not encrypted, and off the computer. That way you will be forced to keep it up to date, unlike a backup copy that will end up being neglected. Sometimes the simple solutions are the best. If the computer get stolen or has a disk crash, you will not be SOL.
