A/C for non food-preservation tasks is one of the biggest wastes of resources ever invented.....to run a central a/c unit for one day can use the equivalent of 40-50lbs of coal or more. Think about that....

I love being wasteful. Its one of my favorite activities. At 75f my AC is on full blast. The eco geeks can suck my CO2.

I've always been bothered by the fact that refrigeration (and internal combustion engines) have not been fundamentally changed in the 70+ years that we have been using them.

We have made each system incrementally more efficient, and thats good, but the basic the way we make cars/trucks/small aircraft move hasnt. The most industrially acceptable way to move 'heat' out of something is still a refrigerant loop (if your process isnt hotter than the ambient air)

both require precise machining, exotic chemicals, moving parts and lots of plumbing.

I'd love to see a 'microturbine' powered car or thermo-electric air conditioner (that is industrially viable...). Right now those two things arent (for different reasons...)

That being said - I'm glad that I have the financial status and circumstance to live and travel in climate controlled comfort. I try not to forget that many people don't.

Namely that they are substantially less efficient and more expensive than the existing 70+ year old technology.

Frankly I'm surprised it survived the 5000 or so years it existed before refrigeration was even invented

Some people like it musky. I knew of a guy who told us he likes to dine at the "Y" during that time of the month.

True it did....but it didn't keep for long. It was typically drunk immediately after brewing.

But a cold one on a hot day beats a hot beer any time. Except for a certain few British brews at room temp.
