I'm close to that and that's why I don't dick around with the market any more. The market is now nothing more than a crapshoot, a casino, controlled by nervous nellies with itchy mouse fingers just waiting to sell. The relationship between the solidity and value of a company and it's share price is no more. If my Apple stock drops to 40 dollars, I still doubled my money and that ain't gonna happen. Otherwise, no thank you. Horses, guns, land, prize winning breed stock. I'm good. Who needs the excitement? If I put it all in a coffee can and buried it in the pasture I could do just fine for the 30 or so years I've probably got left and the family will do quite well. The ranch is paid for. We could live quite well on no money at all, although I'd have to get serious about making homemade hooch. Life's too short to sit around fretting over numbers all the time.

And by the way, I hear the talking heads, including that babe Maria Bartiwhatsit, saying that this is mostly about the european unpleasantness and not about the debt ceiling fix.

In 2006 and 2007, I heard lots of stories about the coming problems with the mortgage industry. We were planning to retire in 2009. I went total cash in 2007 getting around 5% on 24 month CDs. I am thankful that I did.

Actually the uncertainty in Europe that caused the drop.

Investment, what investment?

Stock market is a scam. All the news you read are 'old' news'. They all pump and dump. They all 'front run' the stocks. Buy and hold is wrong strategy. Even Warrant Buffet churns his holdings. We are the one holding the cans.

Don't get me wrong. I invest in the Market but I just do not listen to all the BS and do my own research. Decision in buying stock is easy, selling is difficult. If you have ammo, it is a good time to look around for bargains. I would not commit as yet.

The tech bubble, the credit bubble, the housing bubble. Now the gun bubble? That's priceless!

Its because of the Band of Brothers and The Pacific, WW2 stuff is now hugely popular to collect.

Look at Garands too, big bucks!
Mosin Nagants are still cheap, guess no one wants those... heard they're pretty decent shooters though. You can get em over here for $120 at the local Big 5 (sporting goods store) but I dunno if they're a gamble or what, I'd want a decent shooter not a useless museum piece

Funny you mention it -- I am picking one up this weekend. For under $500 in parts, you can build a pretty nice target rifle, from my understanding. I just want one as a collector piece. K98's were once cheap and plentiful, too -- and available at the local hardware store in droves. I don't see Mosins getting any cheaper!

Guess the best pickings are for buyers who advertise, not average Joes like me. I'm never there when the desperate seller needs rent $; oh well!

What are they paying top dollar for?

Time to unload a portion of the collection.

AK, anyone?

So you wanna buy my spare Gov't .45 made in 1944? It's got the original holster with it too.

Well, I was eyeballing the Garands and K98's, and I just gave up after the first few. There was also an MAS that had been sporterized a bit that I thought might be fun, but I walked away when it hit $250 and was still climbing. Maybe it's just my area, but I don't think any of the K98's went for under $450. I met a guy at the sale who said he had one with a cut-down stock that he'd sell for $200, and I sourced a stock with waffen-stamps for $50, so I put my own together instead.

If you get one that's got the old Russian imperial stamp on it-- pre- Bolshevik, they go for 500, esp if they are shooters.

The Finnish remakes and the sporterized carbines are both going for 300 and the long 31" barrel versions will match my Springfield.

Supposedly not too bad, my brother and I share a trust account we have never touched so far except for $19k I had to take out, and I was informed it was managed very well and earned $250,000 this year.

I have no mortgage on the place so there is no danger YET of having to buy one of these and take it to Loose Gravel Arkansas to live in:

(but I got their t shirt though!)
