How fast can it go? I have a feeling I95 is going to be flat out.

So when are you going to dump that lump for an M119?

Well don't kill me but I haven't really driven it on anything but very quick test drives around the neighborhood....

The shifter needs to be corrected and the combo switch fixed before I can get her out on the main roads. I'll say that it does feel more peppy then that LWB 300GD that we drove up in MA last year....

Of course in the long run there is always the option to drop in a 617 Turbo in

SITREP-

We've taken care of most of the basics. Oil Change, filter change, transmission fluid, brake pads, engine cleaning, polish and wax, installed a few missing bits and a whole host of other things. I'm just waiting on the correct shifter to come in from Germany and she'll be solid for a trip down to PA to pick up a hard top.

Last week I spent half a day working on the G with Solid Snake and it finally feels like we've made some significant progress on sorting the electrics.

The first thing we did was pull all of the horrible non-factory wiring out of the truck.
  • Aftermarket dimmer switch
  • Aftermarket "Light warning buzzer" (Supposedly it would warn you if left your lights on but it never worked)
  • Two ugly yellow lights that were just hanging loose behind the dash
  • A third random relay that wasn't attached to anything at all
  • The badly wired fog lights and it's relay
  • Other things that i'm forgetting i'm sure
Most of this wiring was little more than a hack job and most of them took power from odd places like the instrument cluster. Doing all of this has cleared up several of the issues that I was having. The combo switch now engages both the left and right blinkers so if it now engages the windshield wipers I will have dodged a bullet in having to replace it. (We pulled the wiper motor to clean it and bench test but didn't get the chance to reinstall it for a switch test) One great after effect of all this is that temperature gauge no longer seems to go off the scale whenever you turn the headlights on. We're quite sure that the culprit was the aftermarket dimmer switch which was drawing power from the instrument cluster. The fuel gauge still moves a bit when you turn the lights on but it's nowhere near as much as before and is of a much lesser concern then the temperature gauge. Weirdly the hazard switch was working but now only causes the relay on the fuse box to click once without any effect. It could just be a bad relay but I need to test it to find out. In the near future I will properly rewire the front fog lights. (Going to have to do some homework first as to where I should get power from)

Last night I tackled doing a very serious cleaning up the interior and wow was I in for a shock. I knew the truck was never cleaned and was quite dirty but nothing could have prepared me for the layers of black filth that need to be removed. I put the leather cleaner away fairly early on and broke out the Simple Green as it was the only thing that seemed to work.

Here are the rags, 6 total not counting the disposable shop towels that I threw out, from my efforts and i'm still not done. Keep in mind these were clean rags when I started and were used solely on the INTERIOR.

This passenger door panel is about HALF as bad as the drivers door was.

All of this trim was COMPLETELY black when I started and could still use another good going over.

Now we thought that the rear wheel wells were just faded....turns out it was just covered in dirt and ash. (ugh, smokers car) I'm slowly making progress getting to the actually vinyl. (First picture is the side I haven't touched, 2nd picture is the one that I spent about 15 minutes on) Note the vertical tan panels which I didn't clean compared to the front trim that I did clean.)

One of the problems (That i've never experienced before) is that so much filth would accumulate on the rags to quickly that they would be rendered ineffective on only one or two passes and would need to be folded. NEVER have I seen such filth. I'm curious as to what a professional detailer would charge for all this....(Where's Matthias )

Nope, those are definitely new panels-- your color code was 'ash grey'

I found this one that says to run it's own lead from the battery with it's own fuse. We could of course use the factory wiring for fogs listed in the fuses (I think it was #1?)

Also this, for your perusal:

Ah thats a nice area, just north of Philly. I'm about 30 minutes away from there so that would work, shoot me a pm when you're planning on coming down, might be able to throw something together. That's Chad territory too

Probably should not have used simple green on any of the leather or interior panels. If you read the instructions it says to never use on leather.

I would have went with some Meguires All Purpose Cleaner.
