That's one way of doing it! Also a great way to get a 7ft keel over a 5ft sandbar.

Invention - power telescoping mast. Think of a really big vintage Cadillac power antenna...

They's really impressive and at the same time quite scary! I would imagine that if the weights were a little too far to the left the mast would hit the bridge but any further to the right and it would pull the boat right over on her side

Nah sailboats have a good righting arm, worst case you cut the lines and it will pop right back up. I think the point of no return on say a Swan 46 is 100-110 degrees, after that your going for a ride.

Good sailboats such as that one can roll past 90 degrees, he was probably oh 35-40.

How did he get the weights to stay out to starboard to initiate the heel?

Probably used lines from the shore or dock to pull the boat over. I suspect the boat was ballasted with his crap to favor starboard and the weights just helped matters along.

You can calculate how much weight is needed to heel a boat like that, I don't have the calculations but I bet their is an Iphone app for it!

That's one way to refloat a keel boat to, although lines from shore are preferable. When I get lazy I sail the star boat over the bar at the mouth of the harbor that way, sit on the leeward and with any breeze we are right over.

As far as going over, I don't think it would ever happen since the weight of the ballast would instantly lighten as soon as it hits the water and the boat would stop tipping.

Is that an approved method? It's a good thing there was no wind.

I'd lay odds that fellow was an engineer or a tech oriented Architect like myself.

And I'd lay odds that wasn't the first time he'd ever done that particular maneuver either. They had it down pat.

I'd be a little concerned that with no means of holding the weight to starboard that a gust of wind or wave from a powerboat would cause enough motion for the weights to swing towards the boat, straightening up the boat. Granted, that would require the weights to move upward but I'd be a lot more comfortable if a small motorboat was traveling alongside with a line holding the weights out.
