The reason more US cities don't do this is because these races have a history of losing money.
The race in Austin is going to be run not on the streets but on a purpose built track that will also be used for other events and auto testing. They expect to run one F1 race a year there, which as I am sure everyone here knows really ties up the place for a week or so, and then rent out the track for one event or another for at least 250 days a year. The Austin venture is almost like they are building a track for events and testing and then, one week out of the year, they will shut down and turn it all over to F1. Hopefully this approach will be successful. By the way, I remember the race in Dallas as being down by Reunion Tower. (But I think there was also one run at Fair Park.) The Reunion Tower event was one where the track bubbled up and gouged out and the drivers refused to race as it was too unsafe. This high summer temps in Texas is supposed to be the main reason the race in Austin, which was scheduled for August, was moved to November. For those of you not from the Dallas area.... Fair Park would be southeast of downtown and Reunion would be to the west by southwest of downtown. |

Operating any race circuit facility is a pretty risky proposition, but due to consolidation, there aren't that many owners anymore. A couple months ago, we did a tour of the Phoenix International Raceway. They only have two spectator events a year, but teams and tire companies rent the place for testing and development.
