A 1959 what?
Mark 1? Mark VII? I bought and fixed up a 1964 markII 3.8s with a 4 speed. Fast Fast Fast! Beautiful car! I knew local guys that used these as daily drivers once all the old bugs were sorted out. Mine could have been used as a daily driver also. Something about all that burled wood everywhere, leather and wool just sucked you in. All those awesome dash switches, push button start and gauges...... Starting the motor felt and sounded like starting a Spitfire or Hurricane... (anyway something from a different era.) The heavy duty non-syncro 1st, 4 speed tranny felt like it came from a lorry. (Warning, you will start using the British terminology for parts of your car whilst using a spanner adjusting the tickover under the bonnet) OKAY; I found it quite simple to work on once you did a little study on each item that needed service; if you can't work on cars and do research.....forget it. This is not for someone who just want's to look fancy; it is active ownership. But the car is simple old fashion, old world British. I had to sell it to pay for my daughters birth, or they wouldn't release her from the hospital. ↓It looked just like this one and had red leather.↓

I had a MK2 3.8 automatic about a year ago but it was a basket case. The 3.8 engine would have looked the part on a WWII fighter plane.
I threw it up on eBay for $1200 and it was bought by a guy in Europe. I'd love to buy another some day.

Wow, lots of responses. First, this is NOT going to be a daily driver, I have enough cars to cover that. Second, it's a MK IX. Third, I wouldn't consider the purchase if I didn't do my own wrenching. The wood, leather and wool have me in a tizzy. It appears to be mainly original, has a great patina, and the body is fantastic. There are needs, of course, but what car doesn't? I am looking forward to the final decision, which should come in a couple of months. The car is in storage and not going anywhere, so there's time to negotiate. Here's a couple of pics. Not too many pics online, at least until I actually buy it. Oh, it needs whitewalls badly.

Quote:
These cars were raced a lot in the 1960's; mine with the 4speed & high compression 3.8-6, felt solid, muscle carish and serious. There wasn't any rattles but there was wind noise. That motor growled like a jaguar........

Good luck with the purchase. If you know your way around a car then a Jag will not be intimidating. You'll hear a lot of people taking punches at Jag reliability. The way that goes, it that someone hears something and then repeats it.
Pretty much every MB built in the early 90's had electrical wiring problems but we know better then to say that MB is a bad product right? I'm not too familiar with the MKIX but it was built before BL took over Jaguar so many of the problems that caused the reputation do not exist. It will have very little by way of electrics, leaving just the drive train. The XK engine is bomb proof for the most part. The main issue that you run into with those is the timing chains. The upper is supposed to be easy to replace, but the lower is often neglected and is usually what breaks. Aside from that, I cannot think of anything else, but i'm sure that you'll find more info on Jag Lovers.

Thanks for the info Al. I'm going to try to get it running this week, as I will in no way purchase a non running car. First I need to figure out if it's 6 or 12 volt.

I belong to jaglovers for older models and jaguarforums.com for the x300 and newer models.
BTW the air suspension in the x350 is not that expensive to repair. there are aftermarket air shocks available now. easy to replace too. the ride and handling with the air is much more predictable than conventional springs |

Thread resurrection:
I just bought an '88 XJS V12. Do the same forum recommendations stand, or should I look elsewhere. Also, is there something like Pelican Parts for Jaguar parts? I'm probably going to be buying a lot.

I have one pic so far. Silly 20" wheels will be going away soon. The car is at a transmission shop getting a tranny rebuild right now. Got plates for it today.

Purchased my Jaguar 3.8 MK2 back in 1980 . White with blue leather wire wheels .She had been raced at some time in her life .One mod was to re locate the fuel tank to the boot and the filler neck is in the body work just below the centre of rear window .I found lots of tickets inside for the Brooklyn race days . Still have the Jaguar to day .
