Need Guidance!!!! Possibly junk yard buy

So I was on my way back to Los Angeles from visiting some buddies today in Palm Springs, and since i've been needing a door panel for my 300E I decided to stop at a junkyard about midway the trip and just see what they have...

I walked in and saw some junker cars they were selling; honda's, Alfa Romeo and other numerous cars that didn't catch my eye, but all I had to do was look up and this, was staring me in the face:

I talked to the lady at the cashier station and she told me it doesn't have a key and that it's being sold as is, the body is straight, the paint looks like spray paint in the pictures but in person it looks like the shine can be brought back and the interior is clean just really dusty and the seats have no tears/rips in them, the only thing I saw that needed attention was maybe the old wood and steering wheel? I see this car with potential, I just don't know if it's worth it, or if it even runs, although it has a newer looking battery so that has to be some sort of clue, it's also an automatic and a gas engine which the little bit of extra power over our 220 diesel would be nice. What to do what to do?????

Not for $1595! They gave someone $300 for it most likely.

I'd give them no more than $1000, tops...if it's running and driveable. Be ready to walk away if they don't like your offer. If they want to sell it bad enough, they'll follow you out the door wiht an agreement.

Are you sure that's an automatic? It has a clutch pedal and what looks like a clutch master cylinder next to the brake master cylinder. I bet it's got a 3-on-the-tree.

If it is drivable, then I agree with the recommendation to offer $1,000.

That car wouldn't have won any beauty contests, even when new, but it looks to be complete and reasonably sound. Not bad for an almost 50-year-old car.

If it has a clean title and it drives ok, it would be a fun grocery getter.

Seriously cool! That car needs to "not" be in a junkyard. Unless of course the paint is just a thin veneer hiding nothing but rust. And with that twin carbed straight six it's way more than a grocery getter.

If you can get it for under a thousand dollars and you have shelter for it please save this noble car from being turned into patio furniture. It was meant to last several lifetimes, or in the very least give it's significant bits to other Mercs so they may carry on.

I had one almost identical in the late sixties. It was only a 220 though not a 220s.Still the 220 had the six cylinder engine. Carb issues where not a great problem then but really are now.

You would have to run up the engine to see what you had. Has no great collector value here unless original mint example. Might be worth more in europe. Especially with the lack of rust I see.

These cars were built much better than later examples of mercedes. I found it a fun car to drive but you had to be careful about tires on the front. Wrong tires and it would seriously understeer.

Damm. The more I look at that thing the more I wish it were here and I had some disposable cash because that car barring something majorly wrong with the engine or other major system that's not readily apparent is one project worth undertaking in my opinion.

I love that color combo. I think these cars look better in darker colors and those seats are in fantastic condition. That center arm rest is big and sturdy making for a real armchair ride. Much better than the later ones used on any subsequent Mercedes.

If that is an am/fm/sw radio it is worth about $300 if it works.

That could help to offset some of the initial costs.

I can see I have to go out to California after I retire. I will work for shelter if someone will let me use a small patch of land to park a truck and a trsailer on, and then I'll get all the parts I need.

Any takers?

What a wonderful way to spend about a month in January/February.

If not California, maybe Alabama and/or Georgia

Thanks for all the responses guys, this was at the Ecology Auto Salvage yard in Fontana... We tried to reason but no go, the best they told us they could do was knock of the 95... right.... So we walked, but hoping that someone picked it up for a fixer upper or something, hate to see it be recycled! So anyone feel free to come get it!!! haha
