Mercedes First Aid Kits: Thoughts & Experiances
As well all know most Mercedes-Benz come with a first aid kit.
What have peoples experiences been with these kits? Are they handy? How useful do you find their contents? I bring this up as I had to use a band-aid out of my 20 year old kit today and I have to say.....it held up a lot better then most NEW band-aids that I have used!

If everything is fresh and they are useful. I was removing a 126 window regulator once and cut myself on the door innards and foun the cars first aid kit and just used the gauze to cover the cut.

The kit in my 240D was cello wrapped as a single package and I never opened it, but it's contents looked to be surprisingly complete. I'm curious though, do new Mercs still have those kits?

Yes, but they are primarily bandages and tape. The kits from the 80's and earlier used to have burn creams and antibacterial ointments. I suspect that their shelf life wasn't as long as the cars.

My W220 had a nylon bag with band-aids and a few other items.

I thought that all cars in Germany are required to have one. Though I'd think it would be pretty worthless against injuries from a severe crash.

Using a 30 year old formerly sterile bandage is a great way to test your immune system.

Not recommending it, but why would it have a higher concentration of pathogens than the surrounding air, especially if it was sitting in a closed box for 30 years?

In a 30-yr old MB, the "non-sterile" expired bandage that is wrapped up in a wrapper, tucked away inside a clean-dust-free first aid kit is probably the cleanest thing in the car. I wouldn't use a Kleenex out of a 30-yr old Kleenex box if I cut myself, but I'd certainly use the bandage.
With my W126, I opened the first aid kit and looked at what was inside. Went to Walmart, bought a $7 first-aid kit, and replaced any matching parts. Then I put anything from the Walmart kit into the MB kit that wasn't already there (ie. the Walmart kit came with tweezers, aspirin packets, etc.... so I said "why not" and threw them in) I think that is the best thing to do with an old first aid kit. Keep the case and any literature, and just start replacing the band-aids, gauze, etc. I felt much better knowing the antibacterial cream was replaced with 4 "one-use" packs of Neo-to-go (Neosporin in travel size packs). There was a clear expiry date printed on the Neo so (had I kept the car longer) I would have just repeated the same swap in a few years with newer first aid stuff.

Yes everything inside these kits seem to be very well sealed. I've never had any issues using them before. (One exception from a girl who informed me that she couldn't use any latex based band-aids as she was allergic)

flourescent bright colored finish off the "safety kit" on a euro spec Mercedes Be3nz
Safety vests and trunk triangles___ (just back from Germany yesterday)
The German passenger cars ("PKW's) are also required to have a trunk triangle that can be seen on the trunk if you pop the trunk, or set it up on the highway behind your disable car. (Saw a broken down car on the autobahn north of Munich day before yesterday and the triangle was set up behind the car) AND to complete the "euroization" of my car I went to an autoteile (Auto parts) store in a small town in Gwermany) and I bought new flouerscent vests in reflective orange and one in green! on sale there, for my cars; these are not actually LEGALLY required in Germany but strongly recommended that every car have one, for when you have to step outside the car if it breaks down on a German road!) Also (parenthetically) for a long time the first aid kits tat came in the cars from Europe, bound for sale in the USA were ILLEGAL! ..... ILLEGAL euro-spec first aid kits because some of the medicines/ingredients did not yet have FDA approval from the USA. And the trunk triangles, were US DOT illegal; god knows why that is.

I have seen little sutures in a MB kit along with the elastic things that you put on gashes to close them up. This car was not in the US.
This was a south african car btw.

Originally the intent was to stop bleeding and provide support while the ambulance came. Then the fender bender generation started the need for burn ointments etc. These things have a quite a history, buyt documentation seems incomplete becauise it was regulated (my guess) by the countries where the car was imported. Probably the standard Euro kit was used in places which had no nrequirements. NBTW, if anyone has some dfirst aid kit cases for 123 and 126, I'm interested, PM me please.

yes I believe if you would write a thankyou letter to MB if you were on a safari and a chimp cut a gash on you, you could patch it and get to medical help.
I have used a MB stick bandage on my scratched knee (kid) - the damn thing caused more pain taking it off, it was super strong adhesive.
